I just saw this on the Sunday Independent today, apparently they had a text referendum last week too. That was about 'Do you want to stop Anglo' which had a result of 95% wanted to stop Anglo, what a surprise. I don't know if it will make any difference but at least someone is asking the Irish people for our opinion for a change. Its freetext yes /no to 50123 for 'Do you want to stop NAMA' It will be interesting to see what the results are next Sunday.

Exactly, ridiculous - what will the general public really know about the costs of keeping it open vs. the cost of shutting it down.

Typical Sunday Indo rag-paper sh1te imho

And how would you suggest dealing with the billions of deposits that have been guaranteed by the Irish government?

The traitors who made that guarantee should have thought about that before they sold us down the river.

Too late for all of that now.

Great to see the Sindo's level of Journalism hasn't risen to any greater standards during all of this. I suppose they cater to a market, still.

Get the government to guaranteee them.

It worked, in case you didn't notice we had no bank runs in this country and no savers lost their deposits.

I can't understand this business of bashing the deposit guarantee.

If people don't remember, we were in the midst of a panic at the time they announced the guarantee.

IMHO there would have been a run on the banks had they not given the guarantee. Maybe not at first by retail customers, but anyone not covered by the regular guarantee.

The interbank lending market would have been closed to Irish banks, and the fractional banking system would have collapsed.

There would then have been no money available to anybody, and the end result would be a deposit guarantee by the Government.

So either way, we were getting a deposit guarantee.

Keep NAMA going, keep fireselling houses / apartments, I want to buy a REALLY cheap property in the next year or two at another greed mongers expense.
