There is a road / path across the fairway just about 10 yards short of the green.
Ball finishes on road. Ball Position on road is just beyond centre.
    Where can you drop?

Is it the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole or is it relief not nearer the hole ?
Can you bring the ball forward and then move left or right so not nearer the hole ?
or do you bring the ball back behind the road?
Bringing the ball forward and then moving left or right would have been about 5 yards either way.

It's your nearest point of relief not nearer the hole, this never changes.
It may be unclear straight away where this point is, so you may have to measure out a few spots to determine your nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.

Are reliefs from roads not local rules?

The nearest point of relief is the nearest point on the golf course which affords relief from the condition.

Therefore, if I understand your question, bringing the ball fwd and moving to a point not nearer the hole would not be the nearest point of relief.

based on your excellent pic, I would suggest that back behind the path would be the nearest point.

    Hope that helps.

Relief from roads are a rule of golf, although you can have a local rule in place to deny relief from roads, e.g. the most well known of these is the 17th in St Andrews.

    Thanks all,

Nearest point of relief not nearer the hole was my understanding and you have confirmed that.

and don't forget take your full relief by taking your stance and then a club length from the spot where the ball would be
