Fading red hair

Does anyone know how to keep red hair from fading so fast after you dye it? I keep finding that it looks good for about a week and then just starts looking ginger which isn't what I want. I use a shampoo for dyed hair and all that but I don't notice a huge amount of difference. Loads of the dye comes out on my towel every time I wash it as well and all over the bath! I had it professionally dyed before and it didn't stain my towels but it also went ginger really fast. Is this just what happens or is there anything I can do?

Just what happens I'm afraid. I would use Schwartzkopf XXL to redye it every 3/4 weeks, and if it needs a boost in between I put in jeans colour.

This is a professional product but it's available to buy online, I got it from UKhairdressers.com. It's a bit pricey but it lasts for ages so well worth the investment, it's called Revlon Nutri Color Creme, you can get it from Salon Services too if you have a card afaik. I use shade number 600, Fire Red.

I dye my hair with Schwartzkopf Live Colour XXL and top up with this once a week. It was recommended to me by a hairdresser friend, she said that even though it says 3 minutes on the bottle you can leave it in as long as you like as it won't damage your hair. It won't do anything for roots so you'll still have to re-dye eventually, but I'm on week 4 and my hair isn't nearly as faded as it should be by now, I just leave it in for half an hour once a week. Hope it helps!

  • Thanks for the advice. I have been dying it a pretty vibrant red for ages now and I think it's getting too high maintenance - I'm moving into a flatshare with loads of people soon and I don't want to be the bathroom hog! I was wondering if dying it a sort of more mahogany, reddish-brown would be an option, it's more subtle and might not fade as fast or go ginger?

I used to have that problem too, the best option is to go for a dark red like a plum.....It will fade but nowhere near as fast and is easier to 'top-up'.

I've always admired this girl, from the film 'Lola rennt'/Run Lola Run

At the moment I have my colour a mahogany colour & dont find it difficult to maintain. Does fade a bit but still looks good. Still get compliments saying it looks nice even when coming up to time to colour again. So, mahogany, auburn colours are probably easier to maintain.

I get my hair done professionally and always have red tones in my hair.

They do fire engine red highlights through out and dark browns inbetween, then an all over colour that has a reddish tone to bring out the highlights.

I only have to go back every 8 weeks, it does fade a bit but still retains the redness, I think its because I get the vibrant red in the highlights rather than in the all over colour!

How often do you dye it? Which dye do you use?

Buy a colourball, you can get them for the mad colours.
I use them when my hair is pink/purple ect.

Basically you buy the colourball that your hair is (so red) and you put it in your hair when you wash it (youll need to wear gloves)

I used to dye my hair red for about five years, and I've been through pretty much every home dye shade there is - it all fades, sorry. I started out with really bright, vibrant red, and gradually toned it down over the years to a brownish red so the fading was less noticiable, but I still found I needed to re-dye it at least once a month, which is not good for your hair, and too time consuming. It was gorgeous while it lasted, but I got it stripped recently, it was just too much hassle to maintain.

Even salon jobs will fade, its just a really crappy unfortunate thing about red dye!

Unfortunately red just tends to fade faster than other colours I'm afraid. My friend is a hairdresser and even she said that there's really nothing that will prevent it. A few years ago I got red lights in (really bright red) I loved them and used the specially formulated shampoo and conditioner, but within a week they'd started to fade, then turned coppery and eventually started to turn a horrible blond shade!

At the moment I just put a colour in myself, currently using Garnier Nutrisse in 666 - Intense red, though it's not as bright as I'd hoped. Might go with XXl next time.

Every 2 months or so. Get it done by a hairdresser.
Sometimes i put in a temporary colour myself at the end which will give me an extra few weeks if im busy & cant go to hairdresser.

  • I think I will change to a more purpley red as opposed to an orangey one. I'm concerned about dying it too often as well, my hair grows ridiculously fast. I'm hoping the roots won't be noticeable if I go for something more subtle. Do people use temporary dyes or just permanent ones? I was thinking I could try a temp one and if it came out awful, I could just keep washing my hair until I got rid of it.

if your hair is naturally dark I'd say a temporary will do, as in the 20 washes type, as it should then bind well to your own hair. That's talking from experience.

I'm currently using Herbashine's Red Mahogany. It's semi permanent and gives a Lovely plum-red colour that lasts well for about four weeks and even after that it doesn't go orangey... I'm delighted with it :D

If your hair is already bleached I'm not sure how well a temporary would take, might require more frequent top up, but I'm sure you'l get there!:)
