iPhone 3GS - EDGE good or bad???

    Buying one tomorrow.

    On the description, it says, that the 'Band' is EDGE

    Does this mean I can't use Wi-Fi or something on it?? Saw some reported problems with EDGE :confused:



    Sorry, please, help...very confused about it :o

    think of edge as like dialup
    you want 3g ..."broadband" but not quite :)

    when your phone is connected to o2/3/vf
    you'll usually see one of 3 symbols in the reception strength bar, they can change every few minutes
    usually an E or 3g depending on location
    3g is a superior connection compared to E,
    you'll usually only see E if you live in the sticks or are surrounded by block walls !!

    nothing to do with your wifi, so dont worry there,

    maybe someone else can explain better

    EDGE is just a slower data connection on your phone.

    I used it all the time with my 1st Gen iPhone for checking Boards.ie, e-mail and even streaming radio. Using the mobile versions of sites, it was perfect.

    It's not ideal for more bandwidth intensive applications.

    The whole data on your mobile went 2G->2.5G->2.75G->3G->3.5G (which is where we are now). EDGE is 2.75G.

    Just remember with VF you don't even get EDGE, they just got GPRS (displayed on the iPhone as an 'O') which is incredibly slow ;)
    O2 and Meteor both have EDGE.
