Standard warranty on the iPhone is 12 months. Isn't it strange that O2, Vodafone and soon 3 sell the iPhone on 18 month minimum contracts, some six months longer than they will guarantee the item will work for

I suspect the two timelines are unrelated.

They just threw and extra 6 months on contracts to recoup the cost of the phone.

I've wondered this myself and thought that all electrical products purchased in the Eu now come with a 2 yr warranty. Could be wrong though
There is also the option of Apple care which i'm pretty sure extends your warranty for something like €50

Ireland didn't sign up to that regulation. APP for iPhone is €69.
