right this idea occured to me tonight and i'd like you guys to tell me the pitfalls.
essentially: buy a taxi plate (2nd hand/cheap as possible) for the express purposes of using with a M5 to avoid the stupid 2100 tax

    feedback?

    cheers

Is a 2nd hand taxi plate cheaper than a new one?

You'd have to get your tax clearance cert. Then most likely explain torevenue why your claiming to earn €0.

actually the IT during the week quoted the revenue saying they had multiple records of €0 submissions for a tax year from taxi drivers

PLUS i can genuinely claim thats its zero as I have no interest in taxi-ing.

car is '06 with 42K miles on the clock. how much of a hurdle could the nct be???

BTW, obviously this is no different to what o'leary done but i'm doing it for a different reason (obviously still wouldn't be able to use bus lanes as I'd be solo in the car 99% of the time)

if you can afford a 2008 or later m5 surely you can figure out the fact that the psv tax is a non runner ?

    higher insurance?

    You'd have to:
    • Get a PSV license for yourself
    • Insure the car as a taxi (not sure of the relative cost of this)
    • Yearly NCT
    • Cost of the license etc initially will be about 4k
    • Extra depreciation on the car as no one wants to buy an ex-taxi

I mean if you plan to keep the car for 8/10 years then it will be cost effective for sure. If its only going to be kept for a few years then maybe not. Also bear in mind that the taxi insurance you would need wouldn't give you extra benefits like driving other cars 3rd party, which is something else to consider.

I thought about this idea before, but in the end I decided it wouldn't be worth the hassle.

PSV tax? I'm not using it as a taxi therefore I'd simply get normal insurance

I take your point on 08 onwards, obviously the tax i'm avoiding in this case is the still ludicrous €1600 per anum

car is still sitting on UK plates until I can get this sorted

thought tax was 2100 as per your OP?

why didyou buy the car, knowing the extortionate tax you've to pay.

man the fuck up and pay the tax for chrissakes.

Well if its 06 you can't reg it as a taxi, it has to be less than 3 years old at time of strating its life as a taxi AFAIK.

In fairness if you have bought an M5 and can't afford to tax it. You have bought the wrong car.

i have looked into this already, yeah yeah i know... i wanted an XKR

anyway... insurance is the killer, minimum quote as standard they told me was €5,000 a year... for taxi or chauffer....
cheaper to pay the yearly tax.....

You cant just buy a taxi licence and not use it and try pay taxi tax, it doesnt work like that, the car would have to be passed out as a taxi which means getting meter, printer and roof sign fitted, nct, suitability test, legal metroligy have to test and seal the meter, then after the insurance company finish raping your bank account you will get two big yellow stickers. It will cost you more than you are trying to save..

You have 4 choices in that case
    - sell it
    - chance not paying road tax at all
    - leave on UK plates and risk driving it around
    - pay the road tax

There's no other way to sort it, you won't be getting PSV tax for it anyway that I can assure you.

Well you need to insure the car as a PSV (my 1st years ins was €6700), get the car NCT'd, apply for a PSV drivers licence, once you have all this done you must then buy a taxi licence (going for about €2.5K now) fit out the car with a taxi meter and printer, then go for your LRA (or licence renewal assesment) where you will be asked for a PSV Drivers licence, tax clearance cert, PSV insurance, have a car thats 3 years or less.

Then when you have all this in order then you can apply to the tax office for a yearly tax rate @€;82 p.a.

Jezzz its so simple its a wonder more people don do it!!

So imagine some time in the future when you try to sell your M5 and any potential customers do a cartell check to see if everything is ok. I can't see why anyone wouldn't walk away from an M5 that shows up as a taxi!!!

Its a very good way to make sure you can't sell your car

Why on hearth did you buy a M5 if you knew you were not willing to pay the annual motor tax on it because it is too high.
Yeah ok it is high, but hey you knew that already.

Indeed but I doubt it was paid for out of his own pocket.

But he did it in order to use the bus lanes. I guess he can pay for the motor tax on a s-class.

The tax would be a minor issue relating to the cost of running/owning an M5. Do you know the running costs of an M5?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭bmstuff

I can't believe people are thinking of registering their new car as a taxi just to avoid paying engine tax lol, no disrepect meant to you OP, I know where you coming from, this is just a bit funny isn't?

Yeah 1500 euro is unfair, but still. There are many taxes that do not exist in this country, and so that we do not pay, compared to others...Try local council taxes, higher taxes on wages, 25% VAT etc...

The O'Leary taxi plate is an urban myth - devised to generate free publicity for ryanair.....Yet half of mullingar claim to have seen him
