Hey lads I was going to buy a hd media player to play my movies but I then seen that boxee media centre software and it looks cool and all I will need is to hook the pc up to the tv what I am wondering is will I get as good a quality picture going from my laptop to tv as I would using a hdmi cable from hd media box to tv?

The important part is how you are hooking up your laptop? If you are running a VGA cable then yes you will get as good a picture, however I've seen older laptops with S-Video output and if you were using that then no you picture will be crap.

Ok thanks I will take a look what outputs my laptop has and then decide.
Do you think boxee would be better than xtreamer or asus O play?

I've never used boxee myself, but I've used XBMC extensively which is what Boxee is based off of and I can tell you its a fantastic piece of software. Codec wise it supports just about everything, it has proper soft subtitle support and a very usable GUI. I've used it for years on my original xbox (which I pretty much bought just to run XBMC) and have recently bought an Atom based computer as the original xbox didn't have the horsepower to run newer codecs. Honestly I can't recommend it enough, absolutely brilliant.

The thing is it's free software, so why not just download it, install it, and try it out? You've nothing to loose and if you don't like it just uninstall it and no harm done.

For what it's worth I too use xbmc all the time and I too find it truly excellent, boxee is very similar (as it's based on xbmc) but just has some extra functionality for social networking and such.
