Born in 1918 Emiel Powels ran 5:00.07 for the 800m in the Masters European Championships today

In the over 85 race, Ireland's Nick Corish (born in 1924) ran 4:38.89 for 800m (taking the bronze medal - congratulations to Nick)

The world record for over 90 is 4:04.85 for 800m and it's 3:21.23 for over 85

On a related topic, Barry Minnock won the 5000m O-35 in the European Masters Champs in a time of 15:09.

5:00 at age 92 is the equivalent of 1:55.3 at age 34 according to Howard Grubb's WMA Calculator.

btw, Flor O'Leary has the Irish M75 800m record of 3:02.81 (CIT, Cork, 9/5/10) - he had a Condor as a rabbit! :D

Edit 1: Flor's 3:02.81 is equivalent to 2:03.5, usin the WMA Calculator.
Edit 2: Flor ran the 1995 Dublin City Marathon in 2:48:50, at age 60 !!

Apparently Nick Corish is some kind of superannuated superman - he holds the Irish 800m record in the M80 category with a time of 3:55:46! That's genuinely shocking. I could probably beat him, just about and with a little bit of extra training.
Still, speed declines more rapidly than endurance. At 25, I could probably beat anybody older than 70 over distances less than a mile. Stamina is where their real strength lies.
For example, the oldest person to ever run a sub-3 hour marathon is Ed Whitlock. At age 74, he ran home in 2:58:40. In 2004, at the Toronto Waterfront marathon, he finished 26th out of 1,690 competitors. Holy ****!
I hope that one day I can be nearly that fast, but I doubt it.

Wait a minute, Emile Pauwels was the only person in that race! It was a whole category just for him.

These older guys are an inspiration. I hope I can still get out there at that age ....

The guy's unbelievable - even more impressive, he posted a 2:54:48 age 73 and a sub-40 minute 10k at 76. A good article on him is here:

Also congrats to GCH's resident supervet Martin McEvilly who won the M60 Steeplechase again. Martin is another amazing runner that just seems untouchable. I think he's won his category in the Vets cross country for at least 6 or 7 years in a row (this is really hard to do as you are competing as a 59-year old against 55 year olds), etc.
