My wife has been off on maternity leave and is due back in 2 weeks. I have had all her tax credits while she is off. When she returns she is due Xmas and holiday payments. Is she liable to be hit with a big tax payment on these and how can we minimse these

Yes she is, however you should apply for a p21 balancing statement as soon as the year ends and make sure you are claiming all your credits and you can get a refund for any amount overtaxed for the year.
