Will get rid of the inhouse reruitment (Ryle Nugent appointed head of sport in an open competition - ya right ) and as long as you are from South Dublin you will have a great chance of getting a job (2tv or what ever its called 5.30 to 7 week days)

Certainly sort out the outragous wages. Like Marian Finucane getting €650k for 3 hours on the radio and some terrible research and the whole summer off.

George Hamilton €500k for terrible commentary and a huge amount of expenses. Cant see him roughing it up in the Travel Lodge.

With John Murray getting Tubridys show, apart from Mary Wilson, would it be fair to say that all other mainstream radio 1 presenters are from Dublin? If you are from the country with a good thick accent, is that a no-no on RTE 1 and Newstalk (all Dubs too).

What is wrong with us poor country cousins?? We must start a campaign to get a few REAL non Dubs on air!!

I think this is indeed a timely opportunity to look at the state broadcaster and see where it is in direct competition with the private sector, which in my view is not RTE's business.
The obvious first lot in the auction as I see it is 2FM. We are constantly told how it's not taking any licence fee money so that should make it even more attractive. It's got a thirty year old established brand and some household name hosts. And what about those juicy frequencies 90 - 92 FM?
How much would it get even in these more modest circumstances in the next 5 years.... 15 to 20 million euro?

I would be sorry to see RTE fall into 'Private' ownership because the likelihood is that Communicorp or UTV would be the most likely bidders and their track record, particularly in radio in terms of production, is not very pleasant.

Regarding the value of 2FM, in financial terms based on what UTV paid for FM 104 (50 Million), it must be valued at around €100 million?

50 million?? Wow, that is a lot of money for a Dublin station I would have thought? The problem with 2FM if it was to be sold complete with staff would be the pay and conditions which you would imagine are far better than in the private sector. If these had to be honoured, that would surley knock a bit off the price no?
In the end, it's hard to see how anything except for RTE Network Ltd and 2FM would be in anyway attractive to a buyer. Maybe one of the TV stations.

Maybe so, but most, if not all, would be on fixed term contracts so shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Depends on whether some or all of the TV licence fee comes with it. As a business and for the size of it, it wouldn't be too hard to make it profitable, assuming the licence fee is in there. And a private operator would soon cut down the crazy pay rates the 'names' get there now. They'd also clear out the dead wood and excessive back room staffers and wannabe/failed TDs etc etc

Don't think Sean Rocks or Darragh Moloney are from Dublin. Wheres Maxi from? Sean O Rourke is from Galway. Cathal McCuillogh is from Roscommon, John Creedon is from Cork as is Alf McCarthy!

50m at the height of the boom. My house was worth about double whats is "worth" now also, so I'd say you'd be doing well to get €50m for 2FM today.
