ok a few months ago i realised that google returns far too much information about me than i would like.

If i typed my name into google there were about 4000 results and alot of pages in most of it was about me personally.

Ive been tracking down this stuff and removing it and at the moment the results stand at 1080 search hits. not too bad.

Google still seems to still hold a crap load of info about me cached from Bebo even tho i canceled my account over a year ago.

How much crap does google return about you.

I would think that if I entered my various usernames alot would be returned, but my name doesn't return all that much about me personally, just Facebook, bebo and such. I tend not to use my real name online, except on Facebook and such.

Zero, it seems. Just tried it.

Hmm.. does that mean that if Google shows no returns, that I may not actually exist?

You can't really erase everything about yourself from the internet. Once you access the internet once or upload a photo then it will always be there and their will always be a record of it being there.

Why did you have a bebo page if you want to delete stuff now??? whats the big deal anyway about wanting to delete stuff on google about you?

    Are you Jesus?

A google search for me shows a lot of things but only one page that I can find that is about me. A Flickr account that I forgot existed

I've a few famous namesakes (an English sprinter, an American politician and an American professor in LGBT studies) so they take most of the flak for me. The only direct hit for me in the first five pages of returns on google is for a twitter account I don't use. Thanks google :D

Can only find stuff about me by my username... kinda unique as I completely made it up...

... my actual name isn't too unique. would have to go through a ton of results and still wouldn't find anything about me.

Nothing personal comes up on Google for me.. I've had the same nickname since I was 7 and i've used it for facebook etc.

My boards.ie name does show up on Google though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

My name comes up if I do a search and include my current city.
    Facebook, group pages etc.
Plus one or two grumpy client that spread ****e about me relating to work across the city... not my fault... i told them their gig was ****. They weren't happy :)

    Is your name Linford Christie?

    That'd be awesome!

Nowadays Googling myself just gives social networking and a few old news articles from my student days.

I have one namesake who is a civil servant, but he only gets on page 2.

Thanks, but seriously if the cached item has been removed does it drop off from search results over time?

Apparently I have got two twitter accounts. Neither of which I ever use.

Google have a monstrous amount of server farms all over the world.
They pride themselves on the fact that they have never deliberately deleted any information.

Not to make you paranoid or anything, but why do you think google gives you all of these "free" services?

They keep, use, distribute, and sell your information.
    "Ad's by google"

Everything from your browsing habits, to your searches, your E-mail subjects, who you e-mail, who you bank with, where you go (google maps directions).. You have an entire online portfolio.
Do you have an android phone? because then they have records of where you live, where you spend your time, who your friends are ect ect...

I'm not being one of those tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy nuts here or anything, but most people just don't realise how big of a digital trail they leave behind them when they use the internet.

4000? Man you need to get a life and get off social networks!

I use my nickname everywhere except for work. So if you search for my birth name my linkedin account is top of the results. There are other twitter and facebook accounts in the search results but none of them are mine.

googled myself only found LinkedIn, Bebo and Facebook related account stuff. my bebo profile isn't displayed but the others are.

the first and last links don't show anything up for me. The other two do with my facebook, linkedIn, myspace and tagged accounts (plan to delete them and join twitter!) a wayne account I deleted about a year ago appears in one of the search links above!

NO, thats not how it works, you can delete a photo you have uploaded and it will be gone off everyones computer even if they saved it, not matter what way, same for videos and sound, although I hear you cant delete txt, but you can if its been colorued or different font. btw I work in IT sales so I know my stuff

thankfully, I share the same name as a comedian, I cant find anything about me on google.

ive a unique name and about 10 year ago i was on some geeky Q&A about PC games, where i submitted a question and got a response on their webpage. They are the first things that come up when you google my name.....I would really love to get rid of these

I don't think you even have the right to that data anymore, google, facebook and the rest are giving you services for your information, they own your internet history. there's nothing paranoid about it their upfront and you agree to it every time you sign up to anything on the internet.

I don't really mind Google doing it, they only care about selling your searching to companies and it's generally a good service. I think people are signing their lives away on facebook though they probably know their users better than they know themselves in some respects.

Telling the internet about this problem probably isn't going to help.

I have a very unique name (not George Orwell) so from now on I am only ever using my nickname on the internet. Better to be safe than sorry.

I'm all good there's a pub with the same name as me so that's all that really come's up.
There was on3 link on 2nd page to my linkedin but that's it.

I don't have a particularly common name but thanks to a current League of Ireland footballer I get over 110,000 results for it in google. Nothing in the first 30 pages links back to me!

I don't mind google keeping info on me I just don't want certain cached search results showing up forever. Do they drop off eventually if the page is deleted?
