Hi folks, simple question, where can I buy weightlifting equipment in the Dublin/Wicklow area? Besides Argos.

I'm currently looking for just cast iron weights, bar, and bench. I'll be building my own squat rack.

    Thanks!

    +1 for irish-lifting.

Out of curiosity how are you going about making your own squat rack? Might do something similar myself :)

I googled "diy squat rack" and found some brilliant things!

    Here's an example:

    Ingenious!

d'Oracle thanks for the link, don't know how I never came across that site before.

I need to get a standard bar, I'm looking at this one: http://www.irish-lifting.com/collar-straight-bar-pe-247.html

Can anyone tell me what kind of collars go on that bar and do they come with it?

Also, I don't know whether to get a 5, 6, or 7 foot bar, suggestions? Does it matter?

    Cheers for helpin the newb!

    That looks plain dangerous.

Ha, that rack doesn't look too stable!

I would recommend this rather than a standard bar and weights. 140kg might seem like a lot but even a very average sized guy would be shifting that within a year, and that set is a lot cheaper than buying the bar and weights piecemeal. I've never seen a standard bar rated beyond 150kg, so you'll run up against that limit if you do decide to buy one. The one problem with olympic weights is the dumbbell handles are pricey compared with standard weights.

Those stands are not brilliant. If you hit one of those with any kind of force they would easily fall over, they're only in buckets.

I wouldn't be too quick to make a rack or stands from timber, try a local welder if you can for steel ones. Either way you want a wide base on them.

I'd go for the oly bar too, I don't see any benefit in a standard bar over an oly one, that's just my opinion.

I'd really love to get that olympic bar.. but then I'd have to get an olympic bench wouldn't I? Can barely afford the standard kit as it is..

That looks like a Darwin Award machine.

    Think 'steel' and 'welder'.
You're probably looking at €250 for materials, plus labour/tooling.

    Art of Fitness in Monkstown!

they are home and commercial suppliers, check out Jordan and escape weights and benches. Also Lifefitness supplier.

They also get in reconditioned equipment so you can sometimes get really good deals.

The staff are very helpful and know there stuff.
