SKY HD Box problems

I have a lot of channels that are suddenly pixellating and in some cases not coming in at all. Box is freezing too and getting failed recordings.

Many of the channels are showing this problem - Sky 1, 2, 3, Dave, Sky News, Sky News HD, Eurosport, etc.

I have checked the signal quality and strength and they are reading about 75-80% on both inputs.

    It is a Thomson Box.

I also have an ordinary Sky + box and a check of these channels shows no problems.

    Any ideas??

This is a common problem with the first edition of hd boxes...notibly all Thomson made boxes, and is more than ,likely a series of capacitors failing in the power supply.

The problem with the thomson boxes was the fan was underneath the machine and so when placed into presses etc it had a very limited air flow and so overheated which further helped to burn out the capacitors..

Here is some more information on the issue.

Is a replacement box the better option than repair then!

I have read the satcure piece and see it seems to be repairable but if a new box has fixed the problem then maybe that's the best option!

Can someone advise on the best box - see Amstrad, Samsung and Thomson ones advertised!

Is your box still covered by warranty? If so ring Sky and have it replaced. If not then the best option is to get it repaired or buy a replacement from eBay or a bricks and mortar shop.

Well out of warranty so looks like new box for me! Might cancel Sky altogether methinks!

a repair would be less costly, and you will keep any recordings you have.

I got mine done from satcure(sent them the power supply board.)

    as Steveon posted above.

if you know anyone who is good at electronics a capacitor kit would be the way to go.
