    Hi folks

We are heading to the Dominican republic soon and wondering about the power outlets there, Most sites say they use the same socket as the US.

However looking online provided no answers on converters from our 3 pin to the US 2 pin, only vice versa.

can anyone tell me if I need to use some type of power transformer adapter or just a shape changing type converter??

Most of the items we plan on taking seems to be dual rated, that is from 100v to 240v and 50 to 60 Hz, so I would have though only the shape adapter was needed but would like to confirm this before I blow up my mobile phone or something!!!

    Estoy agredecido!

Anything rated 100V-240V, 50Hz-60Hz will take just that, the full range of voltages and frequencies. So for any devices like that, a shape adapter is all you need. Devices meant for 240V only will need a transformer.

You will still have a frequency difference (60Hz while the device expects 50Hz). For most things, it should not matter. But some devices behave oddly. The best example are ancient AC-powered clocks that use the mains frequency as a measure of time. A European clock would advance by one minute whenever it counts 50 cycles. So over in the States, it would move ahead by a minute every 50 seconds... your clock would run fast. But that is really just trivia. These days, it should make no difference at all.

    hey Undo

thanks for the confirmation, the shape adapter kept the mp3 players and hair straighteners and whatnot running perfectly :)

Most hair straighteners won't work over there but the new GHDs will (sold from 07 ish onwards). I'm off to Punta Cana in 5 weeks today, can't wait! :)
