    Of course they can.
I have several female friends, and no, I haven't caught the ghey!

    Yes they can.

The bigger question is can women and men every just accept that they can just be friends or do they constantly have to start threads on discussion forums about it? I'm pretty sure the first discussion forum ever on the internet started with discussions on computers and within two hours had devolved into a discussion on this very topic. It was between Al Gore and Steve Jobs I believe.

its just a hypothetical question! why?

Of course they can! I think it's actually really important to have friends of both sexes, it makes things much more balanced and can give you new perspectives. For this very reason, I think all schools should be mixed - I would have hated being in a single-sex environment, and there's no way that I would inflict it on my (future) children

Yes of course. One of my best mates is a bloke.

Can men, women and hermaphrodites be friends tho.....

And to answer the original question, of course they can!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,326 ✭✭✭Scuid Mhór

any girl who says yes is ridiculously silly. any guy who says yes is a rare exception. i have only one girl i know who i'd classify as a friend and neither of us feel any stronger than that for each other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭magicianz

Most of my best friends are girls and a few are beautiful, but I have 0 romantic interest in them! If you can't be just friends with the opposite sex then there's something wrong with you, sorry

No reason just thought it was an odd question, usually when its asked people are asking from experience

Guy never have these questions unless there's some girl that seems to be wanting to move in from the friend zone.
Our hypothetical questions are more along the lines of "Can you put a V12 in a Ford Fiesta?" or "Can you live on just Guinness and oranges?"

My best friend is a guy, so yup, course they can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭needhelpguy

Only if neither is attracted to the other. That's rarely the case though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,115 ✭✭✭magicianz

Well duh I'm not ghey :D but Only if they wanted it :D well apart from my ex who's now a best friend......a sure why not :D

Honestly though, I don't know if I would. Once you do it once, unless both parties are extremely open and relaxed sexually, then you basically have screwed up the friendship :O

    If

    a) Im not attracted to the girl
    and
    b)
she doesnt bore me and has something to say, contribute to a conversation

    Then yes

Otherwise im kinda struggling. I wouldnt hang with a dull guy either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,976 ✭✭✭Brendog

    Of course...

although alot of the time they will hook-up once or twice.

The friendship usually ends soon after this...............in my experience :P

From my own personal experience, yes it is possible. But very hard.

As long as there is no sexual attraction then of course friends is possible - the problem is finding a member of the opposite sex that has enough qualities to warrant a friendship yet which you don't find attractive. Certainly possible, though I imagine there are more friends harbouring a secret crush than would want to let on.

I had tried to say something like that but ended up sounding very sexist.

    Well said!

if you went to a mixed school then yes - perfectly easy...

dunno about all male or all female schools.. i can imagine a lot of sexual tension being withheld which lasts into latter life...

Ah no! I 'hooked up' with my best friend once and now we tend to just bring it up in conversation in a, "Well... that was awkward!" way! :pac: I think it made us closer as friends 'cause we realised how wrong it'd be to be anything else!

Yes, they can. Most of my friends are men because I really can't stand women. They wreck my head something rotten.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32 Joan Fontaine

I think not. I've only ever had 3 real guy friends that I was close to. All ended disastrously. The first professed his undying love for me which was unrequited and the other two it was me who fell for them...

To be honest in my experience guys Iv tried to be friends with at the beginning act like normal friends then they either act that they want to be more than friends with me and if it doesn’t go their way they ignore me keep their distance and not seem to want to be friendly towards me often when we’d meet there is a sense of sexual tension building up sometimes but hasn’t applied to all men I’ve been friends with. It takes me time to fancy a guy. Some just tease me endlessly thinking they get what they want but they won’t. some guys iv been friends one of which I had a bit of sexual tension with but didn’t play on it cause he was already seeing someone and I didn’t fancy him at all.

In my opinion guys either want a relationship or they want a no strings attached fun and not want to be friends at all regardless. If they want to be friends with a girl often they wish to be out of the friend zone if they are stuck there they will eventually resent the girl and not want to be friends with her anymore or that they really really want a lot more with her deep down whether it’s a relationship or a fling or a one night stand thing doesn’t matter to them cause all guys care about in the end of the day is sex!

a hermaphrodite is a being (for want of a better word) that is half man, half woman.

Me thinks it comes from Greek mythology, hermes and aphrodite had a child that was half man, half woman
