Forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question, haven't a clue about computers....I have an old laptop that is fine in the sense that it didnt crash or anything but the port where the plug cable goes in is totally damaged beyond repair & therefore i cant charge it or switch it on. I've been told there is a way to transfer the files from that laptop to my new one without it having to be switched on? does anyone know how this is done or a place i can go get it done? Thanks!

    Pop out Hard Drive

Use a USB to SATA cable and connect it to a working computer.

You can then copy the files from it and burn them to a cd/dvd or put them on a usb stick or whatever.

If your based in Cork let us know and ill do it for you.

I bought one of these recently that does exactly what you need.

Pop out hard drive, plug it in to that and away you go.

Crazy to scrap a laptop for this reason alone. Open case (you were going to scrap it anyway), Glue down the power socket with hot glue. Ive done this on the laptop I'm posting this on, eventhough I was told it was beyond repair by 2 computer shops. Few simple precautions like disconect power and remove battery
