TV to Amp

    Hi,

We have recently done our kitchen up and as part of the "doing up", I bought a new LG 32LF7700 TV connected to the satellite dish for Freesat and also to an antenna in the attic for DTT. I have also connected one of these very small PCs (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=354169) to the back of the tv and this is connected by cable to a switch in the attic.

All working fine so far. But then I hit a snag.

I also put in phono sockets behind the tv. The cables from the sockets run all around the kitchen to an amp on the other side of the kitchen. The TV connects to the phono socket by Scart Out with phono plugs on the other end. The other end of the cable has phono plugs that plug into the AUX on the amp. The cable running from the sockets is not continuous as I had to splice 2 cables together to get the length I needed.

This is not working for me. All I get is a humming noise with no TV sound whatsoever.

Where do I start looking for the issue? All advice greatly accepted - it's doing my head in.

    Regards,

    D.

Scart out? I've never heard of a tv with a SCART output port, are you certain you don't just have it plugged into a scart input port. I could be wrong as I'm not all that knowlegable about TVs.

Have you tried connecting the cable into the headphone port on the TV? Alternatively if your TV has a spdif output and your amp has a spdif in, then I would use these over analogue as you would be using a digital link and you wouldn't be subject to interference if this is indeed whats happening.

Looking at the manual online theres an optical out if your amp supports it, otherwise use the headphone out

    Hi,

    Thank you for the replies.

A Scart Out is a scart plug that has an In & Out switch on it. At the other end are phono plugs.

Chet - The optical cable is not an option. I do not have the facility on the amp.

I am going back to basics and connecting the phonos to a portable hifi to ensure this works first. If it does, then it is back to looking at the wiring of the phono sockets and failing that, I'll look at the cable itself.

    Thanks again.

Ah okay I understand, that scart plug is designed to be plugged into something with scart output (like a DVD player) to convert the signal into RCA or S-Video. You cannot plug it into your TV, flick the switch and expect it to work as the TV simply isn't wired that way.

As I suggested already if your amp has a spdif input (which can come in optical or in RCA format) then use that, otherwise get a headphone to RCA cable and connect that to the amp.

    ?????

The TV has audio in and out via a scart socket.
The adaptor simply switches a pair of audio phono sockets between the audio inputs or outputs of the TV. Simple.
There's no converting signals into anything.

Sorry when I said convert I meant to change form factor and not change the actual signal being sent, forgive the sloppy wording.
The TV has audio in and out via a scart socket.
I've never seen a TV with any sort of ouput over scart, which as I understand it is how the OP is trying to connect his TV to his amp. The only sort of outputs I've ever seen on a TV are either analogue RCA, spdif and headphone socket. If I'm wrong and scart can be used as an audio output then I stand corrected.

I don't know whether all TVs support audio out via scart but both my ageing TVs do.
It is still possible that the OPs Tv does not but faulty wiring is most likely the cause of the problem.

It does appear to be a wiring issue.

I connected the phono plugs to a portable stereo and it worked fine.

I will go back to the wiring tomorrow evening and see if I can see where the issue is, but I think I know already.

Will let you know how I get on. Thank you for all the help.

It was a wiring issue in the end. I got it sorted last night and works brilliantly.

No wires showing - fantastic sound through my amp and fantastic picture from my Freesat TV. What more can a body ask for?

Pretty much all TV's with a scart socket have outputs on that socket as well as inputs.

VCR's , DVD Recorders , and the like rely on this. Ive never yet come across a TV that didnt have some output signals wired.
Its true that some TV's dont have say , RGB wired for output , but nearly all have audio and at least composite video wired for output.

I'm back with another question on exactly the same setup.

The TV sound comes through great to the the amp.

However, I connected the Linx PC to the TV with a HDMI lead. But I can only hear the sound coming through the TV and NOT the amp.

    Any ideas?
