Anyone else anticipating this? Recently I read an article in the Sunday Times where it stated that Charlotte (Gainsbourg) had originally been approached to play the role of Serge, her father, which I found to be fairly odd. Naturally she found it difficult to accept, she did at first but soon stepped out. This is the directors second film I think? His first was an animated feature I believe. Jane Birkin has stated that she was not consulted and that much of the film is the director's imagined interpretation of the singers life, so that means many episodes have been exaggerated or cut altogether. So I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about this, at the moment my outlook isn't hopeful but I will see it none the less.

Also, the beautiful girl Lucy Gordon who played Jane Birkin in this, committed suicide before the film was released, due to the death of a close friend. May she rest in peace. I'll be even more saddened when I see her talents on screen and consider that she won't have a bright future ahead of her.

    Anyway, thoughts?

A lot of sex and smoking is to be expected anyway.

Could be interesting. Biopics on the whole never appeal to me as much as they should - although Meserine was great - but I've seen the trailer before a couple of films and looks appealing. The stylised puppet sequences particularly suggest a deviation from the norm!

Plus, I've read a few bits and pieces of Gainsbourg recently, and the man was pretty fascinating, so lets hope they get the most out of his unusual life!

The original concept sounds a bit like Todd Hayne's Dylan biopic ‘I'm Not There’, which had Cate Blanchette play Dylan for a segment of the film. On the whole though the film was a pretentious mess. Biopic are very hard to get right, especially if they attempt to cover too much of a persons life, it can result in something like the film equivalent of a 'Greatest Hits album' hitting all the major points of a subjects life but none of the substance.

I agree, biopics about iconic figures are difficult to get right, particularly as everyone has their own interpretation.

I got a pair of free tickets to see this in The Lighthouse on Tuesday so I'll be heading up to Dublin next week, we'll see!
