Hi, I have a samsung tv which works fine on analog channels but when I tried to tune the digital ones only the sound came through, clear and perfect.
I got the tv off a friend and it is a couple of years old. It was bought in Dublin in a large multiple.
Is there any chance it is set up for UK or is the coding different for Ireland? I don't think it is broken, and I suspect the signal is fine, just not displaying the picture.
    Thanks

Your television is not compatible with the MPEG 4 system being used here in Ireland.

thanks for the quick response. Is there any chance I can get a firmware update to get mpeg4 enabled?

You could possibly get a cam for your tv. A firmware update will not make your tv MPEG4 enabled. For more info see this board

However the "CAM" solution will soon fail with proposed migration to HD when 2nd Mux and also meanwhile RTE HD part time without simulcast of SD, for sports etc when RTE switches to HD, there will be no picture from the MPEG4 to MPEG2 converter. The manufacturers confirmed to me that it's not possible to do real HD on it as the MPEG2 converter bit rate is too high.

    You need a set-box.

The "cam" based MPEG4 to MPEG2 converter is no longer a viable solution and always had compatibility issues.

Thanks for the messages, I tried to look through the other discussions but do not understand any of it.
I think I will go to a shop to get advice.
All I want is to get a basic digital reception as RTE1/2 are less clear than TV3/TG4
Maybe there should be a sticky for idiots who just want to watch TV, as the other discussions are very specific and full of people arguing about what standards may be adopted in the future.
    :)

They won't know anything in the shops yet.

The Irish Digital is only at Engineering stage, so no TV3. Basic service starts 31st October 2010. More areas added during 2011. More channels in 2012.

Your TV needs a Saorview logo "DTT Set-box". There are none in the shops yet. Some enthusiasts have bought various "set-boxes" that have varying degrees of compatibility.

You are best advised to purchase nothing till there is a Public service, and possibly no purchase anything till Spring 2011. At very least wait till "logo certified" equipment is in the shops.

Your existing Analogue signal of RTE, TV3 and TG4 will remain till 2012. Since TV3 and TG4 are "clear", that means your existing aerial will be fine for all channels on the new digital service. Which has not yet started!
