As a person interested in being the man in the middle, I was wondering does anyone know when the next Level 1 Club courses are being run by the GAA. I know they were run around April time of this year but whats up next?

Anyone have any experiences as a referee they want to share with us at Boards??

    Cheers :)

I would be from the mighty Rebel county!

The username I picked is in honour of Louth v Meath though...

Its decisions like that that would make potential referees more determined to take it up and get these big decisions right in my opinion....

If you contact Croke Park they will put you through to the guy who deals with refs (can't remember his name) and he will give you the name of the Head of Refereeing in Cork. when you're asked why you want to ref don't be ashamed to say it is to raise standards, that's actually the kind of person they want. Now as the German said to Gordon Wilson in the Great Escape "good luck"

Ps. Did you read the story in the Sindo about Sludden giving the yellow card in the junior game? Just no common sense whatsoever!!!

Yeah I've been in contact at a local level and was told I may have to wait til September but was interested in was it the same on a national level?

No, what was this story re Martin Sludden??

He's reffing a junior match where one team is way ahead. One of the players on the losing team asks how long is left and is told by ref that is 2 mins. Player says "for ****s sake just blow it" and ref gives him a yellow!!!

the scenes after the game would put many potential refs off the game!!

Who in Cork were you onto? A lot of the appointing of refs is done on a divisional basis/ I heard about the one in April, think it was over three nights. Is it hurling or football or both you are looking to referee??

There was a similiar thread on here about becoming a ref here

What an idiot! Thats a nothing yellow, and something that would annoy the hell out of players. I'd be saying the same thing if I was losing a game badly!

was refereeing in meath for six or so years up till this year.i only gave it up because of work and family commitments.two top tips stay fit and never be afraid to make the hard call.dunno if anyone remembers former inter county referee seamus mc cormack getting a suspension for having a go at the ref in an underage game for sending off his son, well that was me!!and if i went back i would do the same again, not trying to sound the big man or anything.if someone breaks the rule it doesnt matter who it is

Magi: That is a ridiculous yellow card. As a ref you have to use common sense and a s a player also I know that would drive me nuts anyway. Sounds like a pwer trip to be fair. Awful decision. Laugh it off Sludden, don't book the player for nothing!

Rebel Girl: I was onto a local referee. He got onto a secretary of our divisional board. It appears I could be waiting til Sept at the earliest though. I would be interested in doing both codes if Im honest. Prefer football I suppose but do enjoy hurling immensely also.

Rpurfield: Thanks for the tips and lil story!! Fitness is vital I would imagine as is concentration, using common sense and courage as you say to make those big calls. Hope I will have and use them all!!

PJ McGrath tells a great story in "The Kings of September" (every GAA fan should read this). Not sure if I have it verbatim but he was the ref in the Seamus Darby goal in 1982. a guy comes up to him about 5 years ago and says that he was looking at the video of the game and he reckons McGrath made the right call. McGrath replied - you had a quarter of a century to make up your mind, I had a quarter of a second!!!!!
