Hello all, I'm wondering if any of you might be able to help

My brother was threatened today from a man he does not know who waited for him 3 hours at his workplace.

We think its a case of mistaken identity as my brother is not one for being in any sort of trouble. He didn't recognise him but took down his registration number and a brief discription.

    I'll quote what he said
Man: 'do you remember X engagement party?'
Brother: 'Who is X? who are you?
Man: *irritated* 'You know very well who, the only X you know'
Brother: 'What are you talking about? Who are you?
Man: *angry* 'Where did you go after the toilet?'
Brother:' What are you talking about?'
Man: *sneering* ' I know its your birthday in two weeks, and I'll have a big present for you. I know where you live'

So we asked a friend to track his registration number and it turns out to be a man that lives in a place of really bad reputation in the city centre. We hear that his brother was shot last year over a drugs feud. We live out in the outskirts of Dublin, we don't have any ties to this area or person. We know that he was/is seeing the brides cousin and they have a number of children together.
I met this cousin years ago and she is a nasty piece of work, she would be promiscious, and very 'rough' around the edges. I believe her nose was out of joint as she was not asked to be bridesmaid and an arguement happened between the bride and this cousin on that night.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on, this is all the info I know and am trying to piece together what this has to do with my brother. Especially as this party was 3 years ago.

We want to go to the police station tonight and make a formal statement about this incident. We would like them to confront this man but perhaps they have no obligation to do this.

I know that since Veronica Guiran's death, you can be charged if you threaten to murder or kill someone. I am not sure if we can insist that the police take this seriously and confront this man (esp as our jurisdiction is not the same as where this man lives)

However, my concerns are that he waited for him to come to work and knew where he works (my brother is in construction and works for himself so this would change daily/weekly)
He also knows where he lives and his birthday.
In my mind he is planning some sort of attack or voilence towards my brother at his property in 2 weeks time. This has me very worried and frightened. We do not know who we are dealing with.

Would anyone know if we have a case to bring to a solicitor for a barring order or the police to protect my brother or investigate this man??

    Thank you

If you're that afraid go to the Gardaí immediately, they take threats seriously & there will no need to insist on its investigation. Do not expect Garda protection for your brother unless there is a very real threat on his life, advice on personal security will be given if appropriate. Ultimately your brother is responsible for his own security.

Barring orders are for people living together & would not be applicible here.

i dont know the law but make sure he says to the cops that he was and is afraid for his own safety and the thug was very agressive, the cops will contact this guy or should do, tell your bro to be carefull, and make sure he says he is afraid for his safety. all the best
