I just saw an ad for this now. I hadn't heard anything about it before. It's basically a modern version of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is played by someone with a name more suited to a supervillain, Benedict Cumberbatch and Wason is played by Martin Freeman of The Office fame.

It's written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat who have a good history of tv writing behind them (including Press Gang! :D ).

Has anyone heard anything about it, good or bad? It's supposed to start this Sunday on BBC1 at 9pm.

First I heard of it. I know at least one person who'll be well pleased!

After my Doctor Who binge over the Summer, I'm looking forward to anything penned (or co-penned) by Steven Moffat.

The promo is a tad un-inspiring though!

    No **** Sherlock? ;)

The Baker Street regulars are already tut-tutting this production, I'll watch it as the word for it is good. Would be nice to see something witty and clever and original for the substantial money (they even ditched the pilot I belive so confident are they about this). They could just as easily screen They Might Be Giants and Time After Time and be done with it.

Sherlock Holmes returns in three new BBC One dramas, starting at the end of the month and starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.
Set in modern times,Watson, a doctor, soldier and war hero, is fresh from military service in Afghanistan. A chance encounter brings him into the world of Sherlock Holmes, a loner, detective and genius. The two men could not be more different, but Sherlock's inspired leaps of intellect, coupled with John's pragmatism, soon forge an unbreakable alliance.
Sherlock Holmes is played by Benedict Cumberbatch, John Watson by Martin Freeman, Mrs Hudson by Una Stubbs, Inspector Lestrade by Rupert Graves, Molly Hooper by Louise Brealey and Sargeant Sally Donovan by Vinette Robinson.

    Hope the above helps

I don't understand why they would bother trying to bring Sherlock Holmes into the 21st century. Why not just start with a new modern day detective?

One of the great things about Sherlock Holmes is that it is based in Victorian times and so different to now. Also, apparently they spent loads of money on a pilot and then ditched it so that suggests that it may be a bit rubbish.

I'll probably watch this but I don't have high hopes.

Never heard anything about it. I see Martin Freeman is in it (Tim from The Office). From what I see, it is just a modern day Sherlock Holmes.

Looks decent enough.i think its just a 3 part miniseries.
I dont think i would withstand a couple of seasons with 12 episodes per season.

Very promising start so far. Pity it is only a 3 part mini-series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 922 ✭✭✭IrishKnight

Looks very promising indeed. Clearly a remake of the first Sherlock novel, "A Study in Scarlet"

watching this right now, seems pretty good so far. martin freeman is always watchable and the sherlock actor is odd/quirky/flamboyant enough to not be boring. i'd say it could be one of those recurring mini series if it gets some half decent reviews

Is this the official Sherlock thread? (could have sworn there was another somewhere).

Anyway, good fun, wasn't too sure initially but I got into the swing of things.
Nice that Moriarty was not actually Moriarty but his brother!

Freeman is always an amiable watch as is Phil Whatshisdoubis the fella from Common As Muck

I am very impressed with this. Great casting and dialogue. Looking forward to next week now!

I absolutely loved this. I thought how they worked the Study In Scarlet into a modern story was brilliant and it had just the right amount of humour to be quirky without going overboard. Hopefully it'll be getting a longer series in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,200 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Absolutely superb stuff.. I loved it!

I'm gonna merge this with the existing Sherlock thread and amend spoilers to the thread title so it can be discussed without spoiler tags.

For those who don't know, it was written by the recent head-writer of Doctor Who Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (who played Mycroft).

Freeman was great (as per usual) and Cumberbatch was very good too. Lots of great flair in it (visual nods to text messages etc), very strong writing (as to be expected by Moffat and Gatiss) and plenty of humour. Good chemistry between the two leads and thought the cabbie thing was extremely well played out.. it was obvious when the cabbie link was found. But I never copped it!

    This could be fantastic!

    Shame it's only 3 episodes long! :(

I notice that its a co-production with Masterpiece Theatre on PBS in the States which essentially an outlet for "polished" UK stuff like Morse, Lewis, Miss Marple, etc. I wonder if they had much of hand in the final script edit.

Love 'traditional' versions of Holmes ala Brett, so it was my intention NOT to enjoy this. But inspite of myself I did. Very entertaining, easy to watch and just what sunday evening viewing should be.

Yeah.. apologies. Had the Moriarty twist in my head when I was writing it.

Whatcha mean? I meant the twist that alluded to Mark Gatiss being Moriarty, where he was in fact revealed to be Mycroft.

Thought this might be one Sherlock Holmes too many, after the recent Hollywood movie.

Not at all, Steven Moffat scores again, really enjoyed it.

I reckon if you weren't familiar with Sherlock Holmes, you would think this an original screenplay. Holmes and Watson looked right at home in 2010.

Never liked Benedict Cumberbatch in anything before, but he was excellent, as was Martin Freeman.

Hope next weeks episode is as good.

    Inconceivable!

Yeah I loved it. I was hoping that the serial killer's trick would be a bit cleverer but besides that it was great. Liked that they could be more overt with the sexual tension between the lead characters with the modern setting, and the texts appearing next to the characters, got a little too much near the end though.

Did Conan-Doyle write them as a gay couple?

Well in fairness, that's taken directly from "A Study In Scarlet". There were loads of references to it, like at the start where Holmes tells Watson about how he know he has a brother because of his phone, in the book they did the same but it was with a watch and lots of the actual clues were the exact same.

Some of it was truly ingenius. Actually, the only thing I didn't like was Mycrofts last line which was a little too silly and completely unnecessary. Oh, and that girl with the phone is hot. I'll put a spoiler here for people who haven't read the books :
I think her name was Molly? And Molly is the girl that Watson marries in the books. I'm probably going to spend the next couple of episodes trying to figure out which sub characters are also in the books.

    laugh wrote: »

No, Watson was married twice. Holmes was kind of non-sexual. There was a woman called Irene Adler who was in the recent film, that is the nearest thing to someone that Holmes was in love with, but he's not really a kind of "love" person. He doesn't see a need for it.

Actually, if anyone is interested, the entire series of Holmes books is available for free download on the Guttenberg project website.

Mycroft's assistant you mean? She's very nice indeed, Lisa McAllister ;)

I wasn't really expecting much from this but I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to next week.

    Even Richard enjoyed it...!

We might have a breakthrough here kids!

The music reminded me alot of the new RDJ movie, but it was the quick fire Sherlock lines and observations that sold it, needed to rewind a few times as the dialogue was hard to hear sometimes. I liked how they addressed the "are they gay" vibes, as for Holmes' brother...bugger!, they got me....i really thought he was Moriarty!

Glad they are keeping his arch nemesis undercover, i used to watch the old ITV Holmes series which was great, but i think this modern take is very engaging and i liked the whole text messages thing.

I do hope we get more backstory on Holmes, more to him no doubt....i mean, you don't have to follow the book series.

saw this mentioned during the week and took a chance on it....very watchable

I know it's a circular reference, but the main character's interaction with people kept reminding me of House

A very 21st Century Holmes - two thumbs up

Well the character of House is based on Sherlock Holmes so that would make sense...

Good show... Shame there's only the 3 episodes though...

Taped it and just watched it there. It was a bit corny but really enjoyable and well put together. Will def watch the rest of the series.

Yes, it was all a bit Doctor Who, wasn't it? The quips, the fashions, the arrogance - Moffat's Sherlock is not that far away from what he writes for that other show. Still quite enjoyable all the same, with nice little twists on the Holmes fiction.

Mind you, they could have done without the obvious rip-off of the recent movie's soundtrack. That was pretty blatant by all accounts.

Just finished watching it. I liked it.

Esspecially the nods to A Study in Scarlet. May favourite of which was that:
The perpertrator in the book was a cabbie too. Except that he drove a hansom cab (horsedrawn carriage). He was also apprehended at Baker St in the book so basically it was the same idea here.

The phone reference was clever too but who gets an inscription on a mobile?

Overall very entertaining though and I'm looking forward to next week.

I know someone who has one..

.. although I'll never tell them to their face that it's absolutely ridiculous!

I think they look for audience share as much as figures dont they? I think audience share of 29% is hopefully enough to keep them happy.

Really enjoyed the First episode which can usually be a bit slow moving as it is trying to introduce all the new characters but it moved along at a good pace.

I already have it on series link :)

Really enjoyed that. Thought the words popping up on the screen for the text messaging and Sherlock figuring out things worked really well and was a nice effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

Enjoyable stuff, despite the fact that the plot was secondary, messy and generic.

Supposedly there should be a second series, but not until next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 675 ✭✭✭unichick

Really enjoyed it. I heard they won't be making anymore for at least a year as the guy writing it is involved with Dr Who. I've never liked Dr Who but this was excellent. Series linked too.
