Imac i5 versus i7

I have been looking at the refurb prices on these two 27" imacs and the i5 has seems to be better value. For running current Adobe Suite is there much of a real world difference between these two Imacs? Has anyone got the i5 and now wished they had gone for the i7?

There is a good deal more power off the i7 chipset than the i5. If you are intending doing intensive stuff then it's worthwhile for the extra grunt and longevity. Otherwise the i5 will be fine and dandy.

Bought the i5 in the black Friday sale when it was released. Its still a beast of a machine compared to my Macbook Pro (Last gen 2010 Macbook Pro 2.8ghz with dual graphics cards). Have yet to really find anything that really uses max's all the power.
Have used it for editing HD Video in iMovie, running multiple VM's, Watching HD Movies from Itunes, gaming on Windows 7 bootcamp partition, using handbreak to convert complete seasons of TV programs and nothings been a struggle.
Yes the i7 definitely has some performance advantages, but I don't need them and defitely don't regret buying the i5 over the i7.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now I'm wondering if it's worth waiting till the anticipated autumn update...

If you need it now then buy it now unless you are willing to hold out till about October. Apple are legendary for not disclosing what or when so there is a lot of guesswork in even deciding when it could be; in any case iPhone4 and iPad is keeping them busy for the minute. There is also a good chance that prices may not be as competitive as they are now given how exchange rates have behaved so any extra bang will likely cost you a bit more.

Yeah, it could be October at the latest, but I reckon it will be sooner. The Mac Pro is waaaay overdue an update and there's a chance the iMac will get updated at the same time. So possibly August/early September. But ya just never know with Apple.

Latest rumours suggest the new models will have USB 3.0 and Firewire 1600. This could be well worth waiting for. However, there's unlikely to be any major CPU boost to the i5/i7 models.

Mac Pro should be in line for a six core processor in at least one line. Trouble with this is that the residual add on's (Graphics cards, RAM, etc) will make it frightfully dear so I won't be shocked if they have a third Mac Pro in the mix this time round to fill a gap in the range.

Agreed with this though am I the only one here who would like more than 4 USB ports on a desktop machine?

Given the obscene price and the small size of a SSC in comparison to a conventional HD, it's virtually no chance to appear on an iMac anytime soon.
