This Sunday, under instructions from she who must (still) be obeyed, I am bringing the children on the RPSI steam trip from Enniscorthy to Rosslare. I am looking forward to it like a hole in the head but perhaps I won't meet up with too many enthusiast dribblers from my past and at least there should be draught Guinness. It's my first RPSI trip in 27 years! :D

Get yourself up to the carriage next the engine and listen to the symphony as 'the old lady' tackles the 'Rathdrum bank' - once a steam man, always a steam man !!!;)

Might be a bit difficult as he's only travelling between Enniscorthy and Rosslare SE!:pac:

I try to go on this once a year, well worth the trip. Lot's of scenery, steam, vintage carriages, a good day out. Doesn't seem to be going to Rosslare this year but was interesting to see the train run around in Wexford loop all the same time.

I do it once a year, and this years spin was just three weels ago, my eyes are just recovering from all the soot.

Next year I will bring goggles.

My guess is that it can't due to the culling of infrastructure at Rosslare.

A Steamtrain running into Rosslare would look too cute.

There is no infrastructure related problems with running a steam train to Rosslare.

The line to the turntable is gone, no? Is there a run around loop there?

The turntable is in situ and connected and there is a run around loop.

I'm figuring that the DMU set that operates out of Rosslare on the Monday morning will be stabled in the loop there on Sunday, thus restricting the use of the loop to run around.

Not sure, last year it ran to Rosslare Strand but still went on empty to Rosslare harbour to turn the engine, brought the coaches as well.

Looking at the photo in the first message it would make a wonderful postcard.

I think you may find, that the length of the platform in the new Rosslare Europort station, may be an inhibiting factor

That would add to the fun and would only bring back memories of pre Dart suberban rail. :p

Well I'm back and I survived. The half dozen or so people that I met from my past were all sound (although I did notice some unwanted attention at Wexford) - that's the railway enthusiast community for you. Kids enjoyed the trip and we had seats in (2421) the dining car with draught beer - a mercy as it was one hot afternoon. The RPSI staff were friendly and professional but I thought that the carriages themselves were in shabby enough condition externally and could do with a repaint - I'm not volunteering! :D

I doubt they'll get a repaint either. Have heard rumours they might be withdrawn due to the restrictions imposed on them. There's probably enough Cravens to go around and they don't have the speed or route restrictions. Plus 1508 is being converted to a bar.

Could a Mark III set with a van be pulled by a steam engine?

Why on earth would you want to be hauled around by a steam locomotive in an hermetically sealed tin can (a MkIII) in which you would not be able smell or hear it working?

not be able smell or hear it

    i like it already :D

If the steam engine had air brakes then yes. Not sure if any of the Irish ones do - the RPSI Mk2 set was converted to vacuum brakes presumably for this reason.

The PP sets then - they had no AC so presumably openable windows?

In Britain there are some mainline steam locos fitted with airbraking equipment (indeed the Royal Train, which is made up of mk3s, was hauled by steam in the last decade). Over here though with mk2s/Cravens/laminates available I can't see why the RPSI would go to the bother of fitting airbrakes to their locomotives.
