VW Golf (MK 4) - Electric window problem

    I have a VW Golf Mark IV 1.4 16v '98. Comfortline

My drivers side window is very weak when closing. The window will struggle to close all the way to the top. The other day it wouldnt close for about 15 mins before repeatd trying I had to 'help' the motor get it to the top by lifting the window. Its OK at the minute but once winter comes around I'd say I will have big problems.

I have heard of the problem with the regulators and the glass holders but this sounds like the motor is burnt out.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is the window going up straight?

If it is falling forward it will struggle to go up and is a sign that the plastic clip in the window regulator is knackered

It could be as simple as corroded earth connection.

    Try lubricating the arms.

i fixed this exact problem 2 weeks ago on a mk4 golf...

its the plastic clips that hold the glass, if they both break the glass falls into the door, it sounds like only one of your clips is gone...

vw do a repair kit with uprated metal clips are its available from vw parts about 50, fitting can be tricky.. pm if more infor needed

    hope this helps

Thanks for the responses. Whatever the problem is I hope to fix it myself!

I might be being stupid here, but what arms? Will I have to remove the door panel for access to lubricate them?

If it is a corroded earth connection, how can I check it?

Do you think this is definately the problem? If it is I found a good link online and will give it a go myself. Are the parts on ebay any use?

    e.g

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Window-Winder-Regulator-VW-Golf-Mk4-4-Door-Front-Right-/310230595975?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item483b2f3987

Do I need to purchase the whole kit or just buy new clips.

    e.g

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/Vw-Golf-Mk-4-Window-Regulator-Repair-Kit-Front-Right-/180531352862?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a0881d51e

The clips alone are a lot cheaper and will save a lot on postage

Personally I would buy the complete door panel if the clips are broken

the kit i got included the cable mech and 2 metal clips for 50, i did NOT use the cables i got new and just clipped the new clips on

my window was struggling to go up and needed help to get to the top, going down was fine

when i took the door card off and looked at the mech and the clips holding the glass one clip was in bits at the bottom of the door..

make sure you get the right clips, there are part numbers for drivers/pass and 3 or 5 door.

i did the job in about 1 hour.

    why buy the whole unit?

I got the whole panel for €100 or there abouts genuine from an Irish dealer.

For that price I wouldn't be arsed messing around with the cables and that. Take old panel out, swap over the speaker and motor and put new one on. No hassle, job done in half an hour

why give them 100:mad:, when 50 would fix the problem.

25 online would get them online.

    Thanks again for the replies.

The window is going up square and there doesn't seem to be any issue until the last 25% of it is closing. It's like the motor is struggling as this is the most leveraged part of the process. Is it definately the clips?

Are the clips on the link above sufficient? Danielle_door do you have the part code? If so I'll order them and pencil in a Sunday and let you know how it goes.

Is there any hassle doing this? I have done odd jobs on the car like replacing the door lock barrells etc. and would say I'm mechanically inclined!

I am having almost exact same problem with my passat, back left window struggles to reach the top, sometimes wont move at all, gets stuck going up and down.
I tried to take the panel off the door, managed to take out bottom alan key bolt , unclipped the panel all the way up to the top near the door handle and then i couldnt unclip(pull off) the panel any more, didnt want to force it.

part number i got was for a drivers door on a 3 door, the passenger one is a different code, only way to know 100% is to take door card off,

take a picture on phone as you go to refer to:D

there are clips inside door that need some pressure to pull off, large flat head screw driver from the bottom up should lever the door card away
