CLAREGALWAY RESIDENTS GIVEN TIME TO REVIEW REPORT ON CLARE RIVER

    July 22, 2010 - 3:23pm
Residents in Claregalway have two weeks to review a report on flooding of the River Clare, after which another meeting will be held to discuss mitigation measures.
Minister for the OPW Martin Mansergh launched the long-awaited Ryan-Hanley report in front of group of 50 local residents and politicians in Claregalway today.

Consultants gave a detailed presentation on the scheme costing around 8 million euro to be carried out to prevent flooding like that experienced last November.

It was also revealed that a study on the Carnmore area is now to be carried out.
However in his speech at the Claregalway Hotel Minister Mansergh stressed that he could not guarantee that even with these works there might not be flooding again in the future as he cannot predict the weather.

Was at home in c'galway this evening and heard a bit about this - it sounds like there would be traffic chaos if they do work on the bridge.

I suspect that the reason for postponing this work until the summer of 2011 is more about the Government & OPW trying to save money - rather than the impact of more traffic jams at Claregalway bridge.

....although if the weather doesn't co-operate this winter, that idea could seriously backfire on them (& us)!

Fingers crossed, for a dry mild winter :)
