Lucinda Creighton on NAMA related political donations...

I have to say, the only weird thing I can see about all of this is that she appears to be the only person in the party who has taken serious issue with this. She is being treated as a deviant within the party now it seems to me with the idea being spun that her real beef is still with Kenny and him being party leader.

Is there not now a very clear argument to be made for people like Lucinda Creighton, Richard Bruton, starting up a new political party and going at it properly without the shackles of what is really a disconnected and disorientated Fine Gael political party... If FG are making such obviously stupid mistakes like this, and Lucinda Creighton calls them on it, then surely it follows that she is in the wrong party??? Then surely it must follow that she should start up a new political vehicle that is free from this kind of rubbish???

FG had the best chance they will ever get to take over as the main political party in the country (through the inadequacy of FF more so then any improvement themselves) but now have shot themselves in the foot. Well the whole leadership challenge debacle was a shot in the foot, this is more like jumping on a landmine. They had a stick with which to beat FF with for years (the whole Galway tent getting money from developers thing) and they just handed the stick over to FF and said you can have a go at us for a while. So they have just proven what we all have known for years - that they are as bad as each other. The Greens havent done themselves any favours either so that just leaves Labour, and I hope to God people have more sense than to vote them in.

You are absolutely right that they should start up a new party. There is definitely an appetite in this country for a number of new parties "free from this kind of rubbish", the thread about How Would the PDs do now? supports this. The problem is any new parties would need a lot of funding to get up and running and for campaigning and where will this funding come from? Did someone say developer? Well no they have no money left so not them for the next few years anyway. But the funding will come from another lobby group or whoever has the money and they wont be giving this money out of the goodness of the their hearts, they will of course be looking after their own interests. What we need to do is change the way our political system is funded. I have absolutely no idea how this would work but, to me, this seems to be at the route of the problem. The day of spending a small fortune on hair and makeup before a public appearance is gone and we should make sure it doesnt make back.
