Trying on clothes - online

Was at home last night with the GF and were chatting about a shopping site she was on with a whole array of dresses to buy. I asked why she did not think about buying one and she said "because I need to see what it looks like on". This got me thinking that maybe there should be something that would allow you to post up a secure, head to toe, picture of yourself and when you are on one of these sites you can superimpose the dress onto that picture.

Obviousally, you would have to be wearing nothing baggy - a swimsuit or something to make it work. Just wondering what your thoughts on putting up a picture of yourself to a secure site would be? Would you be dubious of such a facility? Think of it as like a paypal (secure) that can be used in different online clothes shops to try stuff out. Would there be a place for this in online shopping?

Mods, I'm not trying to get inside how my GF (or any girls minds) works but just wondering about the comfort level of women puting their pic online. Lock if you feel it violates the forum rules.

    Thanks.

How realistic would the images actually be? I would love something like this, I generally don't buy clothes without trying them on as every shop's sizes are different. I think its a great idea but I'd wonder how effective it would be as clothes can look different on models in the shop or on other people than they do on yourself, imo anyway :)

As regards putting up a picture...wouldn't bother me as long as there was assurance that no one else would see it!

A friend of mine tries on the clothes in the shop (Monsoon, Next etc) and then buys it online - cheaper! She's a smart cookie! ;)

Super impsing an image of clothes over your body wouldn't tell you much. The image of the clothes would be fitted around someones elses body. If you were to put a picture of a model wearing jeans over an image of your own legs then you are just viewin the models legs, same with a dress.

I've seen computer mirrors where it takes a 3D model of you and then puts on 3D clothes so that you can see how they fit around your body but this can't really be done form home.

I'd much rather see a feature where you could input your size and see a picture of a model that size wearing the dress! Would give a more realistic view than superimposing a picture.

Superimposing the dress over a picture wouldn't tell you a thing. The point of trying things on is to see how it looks on your body and to do that, you really need to try it on.

Yea this makes more sense but I guess they don't want to be paying so many models.

I can't find it on their site anymore but H&M had a virtual dressing room, which I think is the idea you're after.
You basically create your model using your exact measurements, height, weight, hair/eye/skin colour and then you can 'try on' the clothes. It shows how they fit and look on your measurements.
There's a small article on it here.

Gosh that was a brill idea I wonder why they stopped using it? A-wear have a section on its site called fitting room where you can select a dress for example and then match it with various accessories - but again it does'nt get over the issue of what it looks like on your body

Asos have a catwalk video for all their clothes, its good for seeing how they sit and hang and what the material is really like.

I dont see how uploading a photo would work, for it to be in any way accurate id imagine it would need some super image processing techniques and i cant really see any clothing company putting such effort into something like that.

I think the asos technique along with showing the clothes on different size models would be enough for me.

I'd much prefer if there was a standard size template and all companies stuck to it. No 'oh they do a small 12', they do a big 10' nonsense.

Yeah, that would be helpful, but it's still good to see what a particular item will look like on you. I don't really buy online for this reason. I'm a size 6-8 so most of the clothing on models would be the size I'm buying, but I still like to see how it looks on me in real life!

I don't think it would really work because a lot of buying clothes is how comfortable you are in them and what they feel like against your skin and how they fall(sit) on your body.... Sure I order things sometimes off the net but it is a gamble as to whether it really will sit right!

I really like the video. I like to see how material moves. I'm waiting for three items from Asos. Hope they look as fab on me as the model (wishful thinking!!!).

    Hey,

Thanks for the feedback here. Basically the thoughts seem to be that there is no replacement for trying stuff on yourself and knowing how it feels on. Superimposing an online shop item does not really tell you much in terms of fit or feel. I'll have to make my millions some other way then so :D. Thanks again.

Any chance the OP is a web developer doing some handy market research?:D

Damn it ladies we've been fooled again...

:D No not at all, I was genuinely wondering why my OH always looked at these sites but never bought anything. Unless maybe it were to "get ideas" which is way above my head when it comes to buying clothes.

most sites ill allow you to return the item if its not right- so you can order a few bits or a few sizes and return whatever does not suit!

I like the idea of having a model that you can match their measurements to your own, but there wouldnt be a hope in hell Id put up a pic of myself no matter how secure:o
