It's false economy fitting a second hand turbo, how would you be sure it's ok?

What caused the first one to go?

Try these guys. They take your old turbo and give you a warrantied reconditioned turbo. I know the link is for an E46 but the ad also says they have turbos for all makes of cars and they're based in Dublin. I've never used them, I just found the ad while searching on ebay.

the same reason why every Irish turbo goes, people not letting the turbo wind down before they turn the engine off.

My local mech makes a fortune on fitting turbos

Check out www.des.ie. They are based in Shercock, Co. Cavan and they do turbo's for a very reasonable price for both new and reconditioned turbo's. All you need is a part number (most likely a Garrett part number for a BMW) for the turbo to get a quote and availability off them.

or wrong oil, or booting it before the engine / oil warm up, or not changing the oil as per the schedule, or not checking / replacing the turbo oil-feed pipe, etc, etc, ....

I've used these for VAG / BMW / hybrid turbos (Garret, KKK, VVTs, etc.) and they are very, very good. No connection.

Most turbos don't go because of thermal shock, they go because either the wrong oil is used or the engine design is shite (poor crankcase ventilation leading to contaminated oil ruining the turbo bearings).

Interesting link there btw, some good stuff about a new type of supercharger.

I'd forgotten the contaminated / blocked CCVs, that's another issue, thanks.

if you put in a second hand turbo trade in the car straight away because it wont last if your keeping it put in a new one ;) also check the exhaust when my old turbo blew it filled the exhaust system with oil easy for mechanic to overlook and if they run it without draining it it will go bang and you will need a new exhaust aswell

Another potential cause is soot blocking the egr valve. These need to be cleaned out regularly (not a service item) on BMW diesels. Lumps of soot aren't things you want in your turbo vanes.
