    Maybe a faulty TV?

    Aerial doesn't make sound Tinny.

    Can you describe the nuts?

Aerials are aerials. No such thing as "old style" or "analogue". Good aerials haven't changed in 60 years. Some newer ones have more spiky bits to get ice or wind and break off and more plastic to go brittle and crack in UV light. Some older ones poorly made (maybe parts missing). There are just good and bad aerials.

If the picture does not have "snow" or "Ghosts" (Analogue) or does not "Freeze" and "pixelate" (Digital) all the time then the aerial is fine.

    Describe the picture?

If you have TV3 and TG4 you _generally_ ( not invariably) do not need a new aerial, if only RTE1 and RTE2 you will.
