Insurance for self and dog !

I am intending to do a bit of driving around in the near future and speak to a few farmers to see if I can pick up one or two new rough shooting permissions for the coming season and I'm starting to think that it may be a good idea that I get some shooting insurance for myself as i am sure that any farmers I approach would feel a bit more comfortable and more inclined to allow me to shoot their lands if I am fully insured. I came across an insurance cover for shooting, fishing etc.. on eBay called Country Cover Club which seems quite reasonable at £ 19.95 and although they appear to be an english crowd they do cover fieldsports in the Rep. of Ireland. Any of you guys heard of them or used them and if so what do you think ? Alternatively , I would appreciate any pointers towards what you feel is the best cover available in Ireland .

Also, I will shortly get myself a new springer - in fact I presently have a dog of about 14 months on trial for a few weeks and as the asking price for him is a fair bit of money , if I decide to go ahead and buy him I am thinking about getting the dog insured. I've never had a workinhg dog insured before and paid the price for this some years ago when my dog suddenly got ill. I had to pay out a small fortune to the vet who carried out blood tests, heart scans, lung scans etc.. etc.. ( the guy seemed to be dearer than a heart surgeon !) but still the dog died and I was left with not only a huge vet's bill but also no dog and then facing the prospect of having to shell out major cash again for a new dog. Therefore if the premium to cover my new dog for vets bills if he got ill/injured and replacement of the dog if god forbid he was to die due to an illness /accident etc.. , I would seriously consider taking out such insurance cover. So, if any of you insure you working dog(s) I would appreciate your opinions/recommendations etc..

    Thanks

Countryside Alliance Ireland provide excellent cover, over €6m third party cover I think, very nice people to deal with.

Friend of mine's Wolfhound picked up a Cavalier King Charles and carried it in her mouth the half mile home !! €1,400 of vets bill all covered by Countryside Alliance Ireland !!

As for insurance of your own dog I'm afraid I cant help you there.

Lot of places I shoot wont accept NARGC or IFAcountryside as they require a €6million minimum 3rd part cover !! CAI cover me for any legal country pursuit :D

Thanks. I assume you mean NARGC ! If so I have looked at their website but it seems to me that you can only get insurance cover with them if you are a member of a gun club and as far as I can see the cover they give for the dog is only for cases like if your dog bit some one, knocked someone off a bike, killed a sheep, caused an accident or whatever.. and does not cover vets bills should your dog get sick/have an accident nor does it cover anything towards replacement costs should the dog die as a result.

I'm not a member of a gun club so if I have read their website right , the NARGC is not an option for me.

I have looked into some other dog insurance providers but they all seem to be geared up for pets only and do not working shooting dogs.

I'll have a look into the IFA and Countryside Alliance as well to see what cover they offer.

So thanks to all who replied so far and if any one else has any ideas/can give any guidance on insurance cover ( not thrid party insurance but insurance of the dog itself) for a working springer then I would appreciate it.

Sounds like you may need two types of insurance: one to cover the countryside sports and another to cover your dog's health etc.

My gut feeling would be to NOT buy insurance on eBay!

A visit and chat with a reputable insurance broker would be worth your while, once you've gotten some good pointers from the lads on here.

PM me if you need the name of a good insurance broker - I've one I use all the time and they've gotten me sorted with a couple of tricky claims in the past few years, so I'd be happy to recommend them as reputable and trust-worthy.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I'm going to go with Countryside Alliance - they seem to offer decent cover at a reasonable premium for the insurance for myself. They also do insurance for the dog covering vets biils and also death of the dog but the cost is Euro 200 per year so I'm still thinking about that .....
