Started a low paid job in IT about two weeks ago and another job that I applied to have came back to me and made an offer, its basically a 100% pay increase over the current one and better hours/closer to home. I'm just after signing contracts with first job and gone through the inductions, they are a nice bunch of people and the role is easy enough but its a dead end type of job, where you'll be doing the same thing every day for years..

Once you've started you can give them notice as long as you give them the required notice period as agreed in your contract.

Difficult situation - been there myself, much smaller salary difference but there was a lot of advantages to the second offer and I really hadn't expected it.

Sounds like a no brainer to me really better money, location, prospects etc. You just cant afford tobe too "nice" with the way things are at the moment. That said it is a very uncomfortable thing to have to do but you really do just need to look out for number1 and you never know they may offer you more money! It has happened before

    Lucky person indeed...
Tell them the truth and give them whatever notice is required...
    Happy out !!

I know serving your notice and quitting your job is going to be awkward, but at the end of the day you are getting better pay + location + hours + career opportunities with this other job offer. Take it!

It's a pain for your current employer, but look after number one. Take the better job and enjoy!

For the love of god take the better job! It will be aquard but you will get over it. They might say you dont have to bother working the notice period as it will just cost them more money, you dont become really valuable to a company till you have been there a good few months.

I would just play this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98958txVSrE
    then walk out lol. :P

You'll only feel bad about it for a very short period of time. After that, you'll start looking forward and be bloody glad of the extra benefits etc.

Think how you'll feel in 6 months if you dont go. You'll be depressed!

I had a similar issue a number of years ago.. went for an interview with a company, (Company A) they offered me the job the next day on the phone and I was happy to accept it as it seemed like a decent company, the guy interviewed me was sound and the package was decent but I mentioned that I had other interviews and I would be keeping my options open..

The guy accepted this and said he would send out the contracts for me to have a look. The position wasnt starting for a month anyway so he said to have a read and let me know at the end of the week.

I had 3 more interviews lined up that week, so went to them, the 3rd one offered me a job on the spot, better money, better position and much better benefits in the company..

I decided that was for me but had to ring Company A and explain, it was one of the worst feelings I've had trying to explain to him and even worse when he came back and said he would match the package that this company were offering, but I had to stick to my guns and do it.

In the long run its better to take the job that offers more opportunities as it means more experience and a better learning curve as you progress in your career.. go for it, there are lots of people out there looking for work so believe me, they wont find it difficult to find a person to fill that role.

As one who has been in the position of hiring and firing I have always accepted that a person's priorities lie with their own best interests and that of their family and their choices are guided by this. People have always done what I would have done - take the best option available.

Toxicpaddy's advice is very sound OP, at the end of the day you need to look after your own lot first, they will understand in the current place. I am sure they had a second person who might have fit the bill, just not as much as you so they chose you. Try and give them as much time as possible to sort an alternative, even in this day and age situations might change with their 'plan B' so the sooner you tell them the better for everyone.

Take the better job OP and look at it this way someone else will get the job you reject so it will work out, its not like they will find it difficult to fill the position in this market.
