Hi PGDE graduates 2010 or other years,

I was just wondering how job prospects are for you at the minute with your specific subjects. Are you getting many interviews? Offers? Just curious.

    Thanks,

    Much-needed thread.

Not good for me so far. Pretty-much ignored as my second subject (Politics degree/CSPE) is a joke subject.

I just rang UCD as I want to/must go back and do another subject from 2nd Year in order to be qualified in a real subject (i.e. Irish) for teaching. UCD informed me that the closing date to do this was last February and not this July as another UCD employee had informed me earlier. This is so as I already have a BA so I need to add a subject to my BA rather than complete my first BA; because of this, I should have applied for entry to the Part-Time BA, rather than apply for the day- or night-time BA.

I am looking for ways of getting into 2nd year now so if anybody has any ideas about the system in this regard, I'd appreciate them.

Failing this, I will be emigrating for the first time in my life. I know there's work in Britain, but there's much, particularly emotional, keeping me here.

I'm an English teacher but also do languages too.

I have maternity cover for next year. Anyone I know also doing languages in NUIM has secured a job (thats 7 in total)

Of that I know of another 10 who have jobs for next year. I have to say, there does seem to be a lot more out there this year than there was last year.

Sorry to hear that others haven't been so lucky.

Dionysus, I'm sorry to hear that. There's always somebody that makes a mistake like that. They should really not say anything until they have their facts straight. Have you thought about registering with the NI Teaching council, especially as they even have A level Politics as a subject and its not too far away from Dublin either. I'd definately be interested in adding an extra subject to my degree too.

Peanuthead, congrats on the maternity leave. Is it for English or your language? I have a language so I'm hoping that will stand to me this time next year:o. I also have English but I hear there are many in the PGDE class.

I got offered the first interview I went on a couple weeks ago, which is a maternity cover.

From what I have heard the bulk of the jobs are advertised in August, so its a bit premature to be worrying yet.

I have been offered 18 hours in the school I've been teaching in for the last 3 years. This is a mixture of second level and FETAC.

There not many adverts for jobs in Biology. I've applied for all that are over 18 hours, but have not gotten any interviews.

More experienced friends seem to think there will be more ads in August.

County Dublin VEC have re-advertised today the exact same thing they advertised in May - ie teachers of all subjects for posts that may arise. Is this normal?

    Yes.

    Why do they do it?

Would they actually have held any interviews after the last advertisement?

Well they did hold interviews. Some did anyway. Don't know why it's done though - could it possibly be another chance for those who missed original deadline?

It's to add to the panel as well as to fill posts that currently exist. Saves them having to readvertise for each individual school at different times.
