Quick Question: I've watched a number of LGBT themed films and I was just wondering if there is any LGBT themed music out there. And I'm not talking about the Village People here!

Pansy Division are a pretty awesome gay punk rock band (queercore).

I don't know of any gay groups and i don't want to use a stereotype, but I've considered the likes of the scissor sisters, alanis morisette and the dixie chicks. My opinion could be way off though.

Couldn't really think of anything, so when in doubt go to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:LGBT-related_songs

Don't know most of them, and a lot of them are just stereotypical "camp" songs, but a few good ones stand out:
Gossip - Standing In The Way of Control
    Garbage - Bleed Like Me
    Franz Ferdinand - Michael
    The Kinks - Lola
Lou Reed - Walk on the Wild Side
    Placebo - Taste In Men
and, of course, Electric Six - Gay Bar :D:D

hahah all the vids are from my fave musicians!

Thing about music is does it matter if you listen to gay music? what IS gay music anyway? Do the singers have to be gay? the lyrics? all the above?

Just curious, and it's not like I dont love me some sterotypical dyke music- if I had any more gossip, cliks, melissa etheridge or kd lang in my itunes it'd explode from sheer lesbian awesomeness!!! Just curious what other people think though...

    Good question.
For me if a singer is gay/lesbian, makes me think that their songs refer to/talk about a same sex person. Kind of naive, I know, but that's just me. (Although in their live gigs, you get many gay/lesbian people in the audience, so it might not just be me!!)

Scissor Sisters most definitely (all three men are gay and I consider Ana Matronic an absolute gay icon - as I said to a friend "I might be able to turn straight for her!!!). I love their music in general and I see it from an Gay perspective too.

The B-52's that have been mentioned before -Cosmic Thing is my favourite album of all times-, again because the two guys (plus Ricky Wilson who died in the 80's) are gay. Not considering their music as too much LGBT, it's just music that I can dance to!
And there are many electroclash acts (the likes of Roisin Murphy, Peaches etc) that me and many of my gay friends like very much!!

I agree with Irish Aris, if the singer is gay/lesbian I too think they refer to/talk about same-sex. I love the Indigo Girls, Closer to Fine may as well describe my life right now and Least Complicated is a superb lesbian song! I write songs myself and often have to change lyrics to make them gender neutral, but that is a whole other thread!

I'm going to pull out my academic cards here and say unless you mean music with a homosexual theme say, in their lyrics, that there isin't really such thing as homosexual music.

The music they play in Gay clubs is just chart rubbish, no different to normal.
The music homosexuals might compose (like the countless composers in classical art music) or that which they sing or perform isn't "gay music"

One wouldn't classify music written or played by women as "female music", likewise just because something is being written by or performed by a homosexual, doesn't mean it's gay music (.i.e., not all Queen tracks or Elton John songs are "gay music")

Nor is music which is liked by random chance by a gay community (Madonna etc), though there is some who argue against this.

Personally I think music which is about gay matters is more entitled to be called gay music more so then any other. Just like films.

    great example.

written by Beth (a lesbian) after the USA's decision to deny gay marriage rights.

Going back to Queen. while 'We are the Champions' doesn't have any sort of homosexual theme, 'I Want to Break Free' by inference of who the writer is, does. (just in case I needed to clear up my earlier point)

Consolidated and the yeasty girls were certainly fore runners in the 2nd wave punk movement, for pushing the queer peace and LGB rights. Although more overtly the Dead Kennedy's had certainly challenged homophobic attitudes on many of their songs. Punk would certainly not generally be considered LGBT music in a traditional sense but clearly, there's many acts within it that LGBT people could easily identify with.

At the same time, Pink is considered somewhat of a Lesbian icon even though she is straight and none of her songs are directly about LGBT issues. Madonna has also always courted and received the gay vote as such, but nothing about her music could be considered LGBT!

She came out as bi ears ago. And when you go to her love shows you can see that in the way she interacts with her dancers.

Didn't know that! I have seen her live and didn't think that more so than any other artist. Lyrically I still wouldn't regard her songs as being particularly LGBT in their inference though, her appeal lies in that certain sense of existential angst that, regardless of age, race, gender or sexual identity, you can identify with her on some level.

Yes kd lang, she's SUCH an incredible artist! She has one of the most incredible voices in the music industry(she actually sounds better in live videos than on cd),she doesn't take herself too seriously as she typicially incorporates humour/flirtiness/sexiness into her acts and she often bends gender perceptions with the clothes she wears. She has reinvented her style so many times, both physically and musically that its like listening to many several different people. Nothing cheers me up better than watching her sing.
