How bad is bad ??

Well i have taken 4 lessons and decided to just jump in and go play 18 holes on Saturday.

I stayed with the irons off the tee as if i can't swing and connect with an iron there is no hope with a driver.

They tee shots went mainly well and i was happy with 14 out of 18 i'd say.

It was my chipping and putting that really racked up the shots if i'm honest. The putting was just plain awful and i have a putting and chipping pratice area at my local range so i'll be using them in the next few weeks.

So all in all i enjoyed it and i know it will take an awful lot of pratice to get anyway and i intend to buy a new putter as my whole set were only 150 to get started and its just as basic as basic can get.

Eh i ended up +46 for my 1st round, but hey nobody died:D

Any feedback and advice on a putter for a beginner would be great ( i am will to spend about 80 squid )

You broke 120 - not bad. I have a mate who was
looking to do that for about 4 years

I would recommend any of the Oddessey 2-ball putters
which you should easily pick up second hand for that
amount. Very good for the short putts...

    Thanks,

I really think with some work on my putting i could easily take 10 off that before i look at chipping or even my approch play.

I'm off to the states in 7 weeks for 9 days of golf so i have a lot of work ahead of me to get that number down !

I recently got a Ping Anser 2nd hand for about €80, would definitely recommend.

As for your round, if you enjoyed it that's the main thing. Putting is an awful lot about feel, I hadn't played a parkland course for years and went and played Balbriggan last week, I couldn't putt for ****, think I had a 4 putt on one hole. It's something that develops over time really.

Thanks for the advice on putters.

Now stupid question of the day, if i join a club do i still have to pay green fees every time i play:o and are these normally at a reduced rate ?

Generally, no. Some clubs like Corballis (which is public) still charge you a reduced rate but if with 99.9% of clubs if you're a member you pay for the year and that's it. There might be a few euro entry to competitions and the likes but in my club that might be €5 or less.

    Ok,

I'm thinking of joining here http://theheathgc.ie/ and was wondering would i have to pay on top of the 740 annual fee...............

    Thanks,

before i look at chipping or even my approch play.

Try to develop a percentage shot that you can use within
say 50 yards of the green using a specific club that you
are most comfortable with. I used to pitch and run with
an 8 iron a lot when I started first and it worked out well.

I still revert to it quite a bit now rather than taking out
a lob wedge and I'm playing off low teens handicap.

No you wouldn't have to pay extra. I don't know anything about The Heath but €740 and no joining fee looks like a great deal.

Depends on the club you join. The new, cheap or non-prestigous clubs generally have just full membership where you pay a joining fee and membership fee for the year and that's it, you play when you want after that. Some other clubs have different stages of membership Ie Pavilion > 5 day > Full. Pavilion will pay reduced green fees and 5 day pay reduced green fees on weekends.

Rare though that clubs have a staged membership, most places just have full nowadays.

Well i talked to the heath and offered me membership until the end of Feb for 500 which includes my GUI and 50 credit in the bar/resaurant !

i think i'll go for it.

I'll hold off on the putter until the states in Sept but i think i'll buy a new set of irons and the Wilson Di9 are on my list as i've been told they are good for beginners. Any advice ???

Oh and a trolly to avoid renting one.

Before you but the irons just try a few different sets out to see which you feel most comfortable with, the likes of the Di9, Cobra S2 or any of what they call game improvement irons will be fine it will be a personal choice.
I use a powerkaddy push trolley and think they are great for the money (under the 100e mark)

I used a set of Wilson before and they felt good so thats why i'm thinking of them. Plus Halpenny have them on special at 265:D

I'll check out the Cobra as well before i decide.

I got a few good tips from a teacher a few months ago about putting... putt at the pace of a pendulum, and rather than changing pace for longer puts, change length of back swing and follow through, he said for each yard further you are away from the hole, add an inch to your back swing and follow through so a 10 yard putt = 10 inches of backswing (measured from outside of foot) and 10 inches of follow through at pendulum pace. Obviously this will vary dependant on uphill, downhill, pace of green etc. Another few things I was doing wrong was tensing my shoulders, I was told to relax my shoulders and tuck my elbows in, and keep my head directly over the ball...I'm sure there are loads of different approaches though but it seems to be helping!
