Hello all. my alternator went on passat yesterday while on motorway. had to be towed. this morning they gave me a choice of having it replaced at a cost of €400.00 or offered the alternator I have to be fixed for a cheaper amount (not quoted). Does this price seem excessive ? thanks

400 doesn't sound too bad. But if you want to save a few quid you could try source one second hand.

The alternator went on my car a few months back, I got one from traynors scrap yard up north (they have drop sites in the south that you can collect it from) for 100 Euro.

where are you located? theres a guy in maynooth who services alternators and starters. Ive taken a few to him over the years. most likely its just the brushes that are worn and all you need is to replace them which isn't expensive at all. Its easy enough to change them too and you can do it without taking the alternator out.

If you need to change the whole alternator you'll get a second hand one from any good scrap yard for less than a hundred. Make sure you get the right one. Make a note of the number stamped on the one you have. theres two main types, with a clutch pulley or without a clutch pulley. hope that helps.

Mine went in my Accord about 18 months ago. Same story; hundreds to replace or possible to repair. Cost me something like €120 in the end to get it repaired and it worked fine.

If it needs replacing go down the scrap yard route before paying main dealer prices for a new one.

Thanks for replies, final price was e261 inc vat, pretty happy with that considering the initial 400 smack in the groin quote!

Is that for a new one? If they can repair it then you should be able to get the job done for half that price.
