Been looking around now for a "newish" diesel and after being warned off buying a Challenger/Pajero sport (a $hit box will be bought for the grunt work). Have been looking at a 08 Jetta from the UK, landed for around 11k. Any thoughts on them? They seem to get good MPG and seem to be well kitted out, I've drove the Passat a few times and they're a decent drive.

Is the Jetta what the Bora was to the Golf?
I think the Jetta is the booty version of the Golf so you can double your reviews if Im right.

I get ya. At least you have two cars to base an opinion off. Tis handy because if I have a problem with my wagon I can search for the Bora and Ill get a fix :p

    Best o luck.

You'd get more Skoda Octavia for the same cash...

I've driven both the 1.6 petrol and the 1.9 diesel Jetta. I would not go near a petrol as the 1.6 is very under powered. The diesel is nice though. Does what it says on the tin

Sounds like a good price for an 08 Jetta.

A very much unloved car here (and the UK by the sounds of it), but that should work in your favour with the prices.

We've 3 07 1.9tdi versions on fleet. All seem to be around 140,000km at this stage. All 3 have had the Clutch and Flywheel done. One had a total failure of all systems which turned out to be a loose earth on the gearbox, the other 2 had a loose earth on the gearbox fixed under warranty. Except for those issues it's just been standard servicing and maintenance.

I drove another 07 1.9Tdi that came back last year with 163,000km. Engine still pulled like you'd expect that lump to, everything still worked but the clutch was about to give up the ghost. Reversing up the slope out of Faichney Ringwood didn't do it any favours either.

As long as you are planning on keeping it for a while, it sounds like it could be a good buy. They apparently sell better down the country than they do up in the big smoke.

Had one as a company car. 1.6 petrol comfortline ( really sh1t engine).

    Things I liked:
    Looked decent with right alloys
    Stuck to the road
Decent spec including remote boot opening!
    Huge boot

    Things I didn't like
Road noise really was terrible (I only had 16" alloys)
    Cheap enough plastics inside
    Not very supportive seats

Passat does feel like a class above and I'm sure you'll get one for not too much more than the Jetta
