Is this normal tyre wear?

So I drive a Seat Ibiza 1.4 sport, only 2 year old, with only 10k on the clock. I recently had it in for it's 2 year service and was told that the 2 front tyres are quite badly worn, they are ok for the moment but will definately need replaced in the not too distant future. I should point out that I have low profile tyres, I've been told that these will wear faster than normal tyres but surely they shouldn't have worn that much in only 10,000 miles??

Depends how you drive really and the kind of roads you drive on. I got only 10k out of a set of tires on the front of my old golf, but got 45k miles from a set on the back of a passat.

There are too many variables really.. what are the rear ones like, how many mil left on them?

Are the fronts worn evenly or at one side?

They are worn slightly to the inside, rear ones are showing barely any wear, can't remember now exactly what it was and I'm away from my car so can't check the report but will have a look again at it when I can.
I drive sensibly and usually I'm only ever on your typical town and city roads, which are in quite bad nick though it has to be said.
If this is the type of wear I'm going to expect would it be of any benefit to switch to reg tyres of even try different makes, or would all low profiles wear roughly around the same?

All tyres have a tread-wear index, higher means longer thread life (but *probably* at the expense of grip).

I'm currently running Kumho KU31 which are 300 I think, as opposed to Goodyear Eagle F1s which are 280.

On a decent mid-range tyre I would expect you to get about 15k-20K miles from a set of fronts on your car.

If they are worn on the inside you may want to get your tracking checked, even though your car is pretty new, rough roads may have affected it and caused your tyres to wear more.

What size tyres are you running by the way?

maybe they are just trying to get the sale of a set of tyres?? or possible you hit a pothole or something and your tracking is out and wearing the insides quite quickly...

I'm on 16". I suppose for now anyways I don't mind the low mileage out of them because I'm lucky enough that I'm doing such low miles atm, so a new set every 2 years or so I can live with, but if my circumstances were to change and I have to do more miles for work, I don't fancy having to fork out of new one's more often.

I initially thought that when they told me, but they didn't have any in stock at the time anyways and did'nt even try to get me to put in an order for them. I have noticed occassionaly if I'm going round a tight roundabout that I am losing a little bit of grip, but I though it might've just been the road because it nearly always happened on the same roundabout! I guess not

I currently have 16" too, they aren't low profile.

I've had 17" low profiles on my last car and I have 18" waiting and ready to go on my current car soon. I've done 15K miles on my current set of tyres and theres still 4mm thread on the front, and they were not new when I bought the car.

I would buy roughly 4 tires over every 18mths and I do 25k miles a year and my last two cars have been diesel (i.e a lot heavier than yours).

My advice is to get the tracking done.

If you want tyres that last longer, you will be sacrificing grip.

Hard compound = More miles, less grip.
Soft compound = More grip, less miles.

Getting the tracking done might help, but no doubt your alignment will be knocked out as soon as you leave the garage door with the state of the roads.
