    Hi guys,

Started back into starting strength in the last couple of weeks after a couple of months off due to work stuff, in my old gym I always did my squats, deadlifts in my socks but in my new gym iv already been asked to put my shoes back on by an instuctor while doing my squats. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a suitable pair of trainers to wear so I can avoid this hassle in future? Something not too pricey hopefully :)

I still do squats and deads in my socks. Tell whoever it is that he/she is wrong! There's flat soled shoes in Pennys and Dunnes for 6? euro. They'd do like.

Id love to but it was one of the members of staff who told me, said it was due to health and safety reasons if the weight fell on my feet etc. ( I dont think my runners would really protect too well from this eventuality either tbh!!)

Flat soled canvas runners. The cheaper the better. :)

Yes, they had fake converse in dunnes for €6 last time I was in. Low cut ones.

Bought mine on ebay for €15, a definate winner.

OP, did you ask the trainer in your gym why you she asked you to put your shoes back on? It's not as if a pair of runners will make any difference if you drop a weight on your feet.

Would these be any use when doing squats, deadlifts etc? Just I already have a pair of them but don't wear them in the gym?

Yep, they'll be fine. The recommendation is to use a shoe with a flat sole or lift in stockings or barefoot (which some gym frown upon).

The pic you posted are just just Addidas's version of the Converse.

Those are what I wear. I think I might get something with a higher top and laces though. One good thing about the vans is that they take up very little space in my bag.

Its all about the amount of cushioning in the sole. Chuck Taylors are great because there's none.

If your gym allows you to deadlift barefoot that would be my preferred option.

I'm not really sure if there's any benefit to squatting barefoot though, but I've started doing it recently.
