BOEING 787

Is the 787 a direct replacement for any other Boeing or is it in a niche all of its own? It looks to be similar in size to a 757 but I could be completely wrong on that!

Is it a standard 3+3 seating layout? I suppose I could google it and get the different answers from lots of different sites but maybe someone here is knowledgeable enough to answer them in one go:D

I just think it is out on its own for fuel efficiency and the use of lightweight carbon composite materials,

Other than that It would fit between the size of a 737 800 and 777.

B767-300ER in size is very close to the B787-800
B767-400ER in size is very close to the B787-900
    Both are twin aisle.
I guess it is weight and fuel efficency that will seperate them. The B767 was a replacement for the good old Lockheed L1011 Tristar.

I'm not sure if I like this aircraft or not! not a fan of the Boeing fleet in general and don't like the front end styling of the 787. Maybe it'll grow on me.

I think it looks good - will we see it in Irish airports or will it be mostly in bigger hubs.

It will not be restricted to the hubs like the 380 but it will all depend on who buys 'em! I suppose AA, US airways, Delta and Conti who currently fly 757's and 767's into Dub will wave the patriotic flag and buy the 787.

Continental have some ordered but i wouldn't imagine you'll see them on the EWR-DUB route, more likely LHR-EWR and other long haul routes westbound out of the states.

    Hi Andrew

Couple of vids from the BBC here at Farnborough. First one has a brief interview with the chief project engineer and the second is inside the plane.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-10676791

Part of the "fast-growing market for single-aisle aircraft" apparently.

As far as I am aware the B787 is a widebody with 2 aisles? I am correct?

Well you have to look at the numbers of B757s and B767 to be replaced over the next 5-10 years. Boeing wants to keep those order with them rather than going to the A350.

Once A or B raise the bar, the other must do so just to keep parity. Notice neither is rushing to replace the B737/A320. But am sure as soon as one puts a proposal out the other will follow quickly.

i did say "mock up" ha ha ha! Ya i doubt its likely to look like that but it clearly illustrates the plane is a widebody

Just a snippet on channel 4 news a few mins ago from Farnborough, Thomson Airways have 13 on order so we may eventually see one in Dubin on a charter:D

God - those wings! They are awful looking. In the video it almost looked like the plane was going to start flapping them like a bird. And I don't like the nose either - and the blue streak pointing downwards does not help appearances.

But aesthetics aside, it will no doubt be another Boeing winner in a long line of winners.

    2 questions,

Why no winglets? i thought they we de riguer for fuel efficiency?

And am i imagining it, but did that 787 in the vid at farnborough not stop in an impossibly short distance? i know it would be empty of people, luggage and fuel, but that seemed like a mighty impressive landing? looks like you could have nearly put it down in LCY!!

The B787 are similar to the B777 sets. They were designed after winglets, the have fuel saving tech built into them. Notive the tapering and slight tunr at the wingtip. Off the top of my head I can't remember the term for them. So we will never see B737/B757/B767 style winglets on the B777/B787.

It was an impressive short stop. According to the A.Net thread on this point an empty B747 can stop in a similar distance.

In terms of styling.design: It seems quite stubby. Was that the baseline B787-900? Would prefer to see the slightly longer B787-1000 version. Same thing with the A388,looks stubby, graphics of the A389 look a lot better to me.

i could see michael o'leary looking at the a380-900 with 900 economy seats and thinking bout flying one out of heathrow to new york or somewhere popular

Mr. O'Leary has openly said that it would be impossible to make a profit with cheap economy only flights across the atlantic. He said he would need business class and scew them or words to that effect.

Well, they plan for it to be on the market for 50 years in various forms, so designing from the ground up was a good idea. Reduce cost of build, improve structure, reduce weight, improve efficiency are all things that are hard to retro-fit!!
Also if you don't move forward you get left behind. Airbus's A350 will be it's direct competitor.
    @Foggy - yep, twin-aisle. 3-3-3

Heres a nice shot of her lining up for departure:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/39896705@N05/4813707300/in/photostream/

On A.Net a poster stated they got to have a tour. Very jealous.

In terms of Ryanair longhaul.....they are waiting for the price of widebodies to drop then they will acquire a number at discount. Perhaps A330 ops in 3-5 years. Once the A350 and B787 are fully onstream demand for A330 will drop.

I got to sit in that mock up at Boeing in Seattle a while back.
The most notable thing thats different is the size of the windows - they are huge compared to the port holes on current models.

As for the wings - a video shown showed the wings almost flapping in heavy turbulence - might be great for the passengers not looking out those big windows but I'm not sure how I would feel about seeing that much movement in the wings.

Interestingly Boeing will offer only a single cabin spec to airlines. No more tailoring the curtain rails, oven doors, crew seats etc, for each customer. This will help the construction process for Boeing and will help the leasing companies to sell used aircraft more easily.
