Online Music Collaboration Project

    Howdy everyone,

Since I've joined Boards in look of musicians interested in jamming, recording etc, I've found that location & age have been the main obstacles to getting something off the ground.

What I propose is a project where all musicians can participate in the creation of the music from start to finish, regardless of age, gender or where they live. I envision it working something like this:

    • A songwriter will come up with the initial idea, be it a guitar riff, a bass line, a vocal line, a piano piece, a drum beat or a simple hummed melody.
    • Then they post a download link (maybe moderators can help with this?) on the thread (or just email the file, what do you think is best?) & everyone downloads & takes a listen. Whoever has any ideas can do a rough recording & post it back on the thread. We can then discuss what parts suits best & move forward from there. I'm thinking that the initial songwriter should maybe have final say, as they would have an idea in their head what they are looking to achieve with the song (tone, tempo, mood etc)
    • We continue on down this road until we reach a final cut. I'm hoping for different vocalists for different parts of songs, different musicians & different instruments also (Live drums, programmed beats or hand percussion. Pianos or keyboards, electric or acoustic guitars, violins, cellos, full choirs!!! whatever suits a particular piece of music.)

Who knows, if it goes well, we could all get together & play it live at some event or another. Just an idea, said I'd throw it out there. Let me know what you all think & maybe we can get the ball rolling...

A few video links to show where I'm coming from:

This is something I saw years ago & although I don't like most of the artists involved, it still stuck in my mind through the years. I like the idea of using so many different styles in the one song:

Look forward to hearing what y'all think.

    Paddy

Great idea - a good site for this is www.indabamusic.com.

I'd be relectant to get involved coz so many songs are finished and dont want to hand over like that although i wouldn't mind having people sing or play drums and bass on some demos.

Location is definitely a factor. I don't have any statistics but it always seems to me that the majority of threads are from people in the Dublin area. I don't think age is a big factor or at least it shouldn't be. Once my bandmates are old enough to have a few pints in a pub I'm happy :).

Another factor is the abundance of guitar players and the corresponding lack of drummers and vocalists.

This sounds like a good idea and it's something I've thought about trying to put together myself but without it being tightly controlled it could get very complicated very quickly. Whenever I've done this in the past we've usually ended up arguing pointlessly over the drums or something rather than actually laying down bass or guitar lines. The first issue I see is hosting. I suppose something like Rapidshare or Hotfile could be used. E-mail isn't going to work too well once the attachment size gets great than 10mb (which it probably will quite quickly if we're swapping WAV files). The next issue is how to combine the different parts. If I'm using FL Studio, someone else is using Ableton and someone else is using Cubase we can't just exchange project files, we have to render to WAV. Then again I suppose we'd probably have to do that anyway. The next issue is the discussion and how to move forward on the various parts. Do you set a cut off time, try to have a poll or come up with some other method?

Anyway, I'm definitely interested in this. I bought myself a copy of Superior Drummer last month so I can put together some beats. I also play bass and guitar so I can do either of those.

Great idea - a good site for this is www.inabamusic.com.
Can you check that link again? I don't think you meant to link to a holding page.

Sorry - www.indabamusic.com. Usually check my links forgot this time. Was just home from the pub. :o

Its a decent site you can sign up as a musician and start or join sessions and upload your part. I've had a bit of fun adding solos to people's sessions but I haven't got much going on in my own sessions although people have joined but haven't got around to uploading anything.

We could all add each other on Boards and maybe form a group on there.

Heh, no worries. I usually go to bed when I come home from the pub. God knows what I'd get up to if I turned on my computer ;).

Anyway that site looks quite interesting. I'll give it a more extensive over the weekend if I get time.

*btw, I agree about the perfect day version being muck. It's an abortion of qhat was a brilliant song and should be taken out the back and shot for everyones benefit.

Sounds like it could be interesting! Let us know if you can work out the bugs listed above, I'd like to contribute with Bass and Vocals :D

Question: who gets to do the final mix?! Or does everyone get all tracks so we end up with 5 final mix's? Just askin! Best of luck with this anyway :pac:

    Cheers for the interest guys!!

Thanks Mr. Nut for the link, that site is exactly what I'm looking for!

As you said, I guess we can all register & set up a group through this thread.

Thanks for the imput & advice Malice, it's really appreciated!

All that's left is to come up with a name for the project group.

    Something anonymous but funny, like:

"We could be rapists" or "Too much awesome"

    You get the idea :D
