I need to find somewhere to live or I will be homeless. I get 196 per week, could I start renting an apartment and get rent allowance immediately, or do I have to wait the 6 months? ty.

You either have to be assessed as having a need for housing by a local authority OR renting privately for 6 months.

if you are renting now then why not ask LL to sign RA forms or if your living at home why are you being made homeless?? we dont know what situation you are in at present to advise you correctly OP

No?? Because you don't have a housing need... you can appeal that decision though.

Thanks-have found out from someone today though, that they were assessed as NOT being in need of housing but still got rent allowance

I think working out rent allowance is a bit more complicated than working out jsa etc. so I really would advise you just biting the bullet and going in to see your CWO to see for sure. they will advise you on what you can get and what to do. Just be prepared for a long wait to see your CWO
