Getting mini displayport to hdmi working

I bought a mini display port to hdmi cable on ebay. When I connect my macbook pro to the tv, the tv checks for a connection but can't find one.

Nothing appears when I try to detect displays in the display preferences.

I changed the screen resolution in osx to the very minimum but still nothing appears.
The hdmi cable works ok as I've tried it with my video camera.

    Any suggestions?

Is this the most recent Macbook Pro?

Do you need to select a signal source using the remote for your telly?

    Thanks for the replies.

    It's a late 2008 unibody.

I made sure the right hdmi port was selected, and it was the same no matter port which I tried.

Might be a bad cable. Have you any way of testing it with something else, like a monitor?

No, unfortunately there are no other hdmi devices in the house and I don't have access to any in Dublin.

I thought it was only the 2010 MacBook Pro's that support HDMI though the mini display port?

The new ones support audio and video to hdmi. The older models can only carry video via the displayport.
