    From the Indo:
The Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to prosecute former Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea over a sworn affidavit he made that led to him leaving the Cabinet.

Last summer, Mr O'Dea made a sworn statement in connection with a High Court case taken by Sinn Féin local election candidate Maurice Quinlivan.

While he accepted making comments about Mr Quinlivan, which were published in a local newspaper, he denied making other unpublished comments, which figured in the court case.

It later transpired that he had in fact made the comments. Mr O'Dea said he had forgotten making them and apologised.

The case centred on unfounded allegations about Mr Quinlivan

Lying under oath. But no punishment.

    Whisky.
    Tango.
    Foxtrot.

Of course not. Sure he's terribly sorry and learned his lesson.
It's time to look to the future and stop dwelling in the past.

What are they going to do, put him in jail while they are handing out suspended sentences to dangerous criminals or an ever frequent basis?

    Or a woman with one.

well... at least it cut out the millions that may have been squandered on a tribunal / investigation / Court case... that would have come to the same conclusion...

AFAIK, it would be normal for someone in this situation not to be prosecuted - I don't think it's a political favour.

In other news absolutely no one in Irish society, govt or financial circles is in any way responsible for the financial mess we are in.

    Building contractor convicted of perjury

A BUILDING contractor who committed perjury while giving evidence at Navan District Court was yesterday given a six-month jail sentence

Jailed for a year over perjury

A MAN who accepted his failure to give evidence in a murder trial caused it to collapse has been jailed for a year for perjury and for making a statement with intent to pervert the course of justice.

Both of those relate to criminal matters, not civil ones.

Bit of a difference between saying something you shouldn't have and assault and murder.

It probably would have been a waste of time and money going after him.

I would much rather they did go after him, even more so and punish him hard. So the rest of em will think twice before doing something like this again. The ****ing cheek of him, sorry I forgot, when your in the Dail your above the Law.

He's out of government that's reward enough, now go after the next one like him and so on. We shouldn't waste time looking for revenge we've got a country to run.

Out of cabinet, he is still a TD and represents Limerick

How is he out of government?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 994 ✭✭✭LookBehindYou

Meanwhile he carries on with his ministers pension and TD salary plus expenses along with the mighty bertie and co

Or out of cabinet sorry. He's halfway there. :pac: I suppose he probably will be relected by his faithful but the people get the government they deserve.

    Issues affecting Limerick
    • Dell and related companies, unemployment
    • Shannon, yes in Clare but affects entire Mid-West and West
    • Gangland crime, crime in general

Ah there are more but that's what you'll read in newspapers.
Probably will be reelected but not with the highest amount of 1st preferences which I believe was achieved

I thought it was odd that what he did was not okay for a Minister (according to Gormley and Co) but was okay for TD. The same for Trevor Sargent resigning as a Minister.

What actions require a TD to give up their seat? Has anyone ever done it for a reason other than being dead?

Martin Cullen resigned for ill health last March
    George Lee resigned too

    It does happen
