I started a new job about a month and a half ago and although I gave my new employer my P45 I have been on emergency tax since I started. Any ideas on when I should be coming off it? I'm am going to have a chat with them during the week about it because this week almost €80 was taken from my wages in emergency tax

ring the tax office with your PPS no, your employer PAYE no (you'll have to get this from them, although it may be on a past pay slip), tell them your start date and they will send out a new tax credit certificate to your current employer. Chances are your new employer hasn't forwarded your P45 to the tax office.

Also, if your P45 is for 2010, then it is valid but if its from 2009 then it's no use anyway as they are only valid for the current tax year.

I always advise new staff to bypass waiting for an employer to forward details to the tax office and contact them yourself - much quicker and at least you know when it was done.

If you discover that a tax cert has already been sent to your employer then you should let revenue know as there is no reason why you should still be on emergency tax if they have the correct cert for you.
