Insurance Payout

I had an accident a few months back and the other party was at fault. I have been advised to go ahead with the repairs and get the garage to send the bill to the insurance company and they will cover the costs.

Am I however, entitled to a cheque from the insurance company as opposed to going straight to the garage and getting the repairs done for that amount?

Do differrent insurance companies have different policies regarding this matter??

    Any advice appreciated.

Do you have 3rd party or comprehensive insurance?

Either way just make a telephone call to your insurance company and they will explain the procedure very clearly to you.

Generally if you use the insurance companies approved repairer, the transaction can be handled entirely by them, with the invoice going srtaight to the insurer, all you need to do is arrange for them to collect the car, fix it and return it to you. Which insurance company is it?

I think what the OP wants to know is whether they can get the money as opposed to having the car repaired at the insurers expense.

The answer is yes, you get a quote, if they are happy with it and their assessor agrees then they can issue you with a cheque for that amount and it is up to you what you do with it i.e. spend in on the repairs, go somewhere cheaper or go on holiday!

Correct me if Im wrong but they would issue the cheque to the garage doing the repairs rather then to the individual in question, no? I doubt insurance companies are that stupid tbh.

Some of them will now only issue it to the garage specially fo small repair that you could get away without doing. This stops alot of claims for little bumps that people then dont bother fixing when they realise there is nothing in it for themselves.
In the case of a major accident where the car is not roadworthy after the accident, they generally agree a repair figure & whether you wish to spend it on the car or use it to buy another car is pretty much up to you.
Quinn for example turn up at your house, write a cheque to you & case is closed

This is what I was hoping so I could get the repairs done cheaper and spend the rest on other parts of the car.

    The insurance co is Zurich.
I know of people who have been payed out and havnt bothered repairing their car and for this reason perhaps it is their policy to repair the car only after receipt of a bill for repairs.

You can request it to be made payable to you. they may fight u a bit on it but it is allowed.

Your property suffered damages. Once the insurance company and you come to an agreement about the cost to put your property back into orignal condition say €xyz. They can issue the cheque to you. If you dont want to repair your property you are under no legal requirment to do so.

The amount €xyz once recived by you, discharges the insurance company from any further liability in realtion to the physical damage to your car.

Great, I just want to make sure of this before I call the insurance company.
