Did jughead go off?

Something I've been thinking about. The end of season 5 is Juliet banging on Jughead, a sound of an explosion and white light. The bomb seemed like it went off but yet everyone survived as well the island which seems an unlikely prospect after the denotation of a nuclear bomb. Hell even Juliet made it for a bit despite being a foot away from it. Which is it?

Is there any other explanations did it partially go off, combine with pocket of energy causing the incident and sending the Losties to 2007 and well basically a wizard did it.

    Anymore ideas?

i think we are to assume it did. it was only a little part of the bomb. and it was far underground. might have done enough to stop the electromagnetism but not enough to kill everyone on the island. juliet wasnt hurt by it she went back to the current timeline with everyone else. remeber sayid in season 2 saying that he hadent seen anything like this since chernobyl. talking about the cement under the hatch

    My take:

It went off and it worked, just not the way Faraday thought it would. Instead of exploding and wiping out the energy (which wasn't possible, it was too great), it imploded and sealed the hole that Dharma opened. In other words, it did the exact same thing the failsafe did 30 years later.

Had the Losties not been there in 1977 to denote the bomb, the energy would have been released and destroyed the island. But because they were there and they did denote the bomb, they saved the island, and ironically enough, ensured that they would one day crash there. So Jack was right, they were meant to do it. Thus Faraday's "variable" talk was nonsense. As his own death proved - whatever happened, happened.

I actually think Jughead mostly sealed off the leak, but that Dharma opened it again in order to study it. Having already witnessed the Jughead implosion, they knew they had a "failsafe" if anything went wrong. Dharma probably never really learned their lesson which is why they eventually had to go.

Agree with SP. Also, it going off could also explain why Richard said he saw them die in 1977. He knew they were at the centre of the explosion, so he thought they were killed when the bomb exploded, whereas they were actually sent back to 2007

Actually I believe that was how season 5 was meant to end originally, watching the bomb 'explode' from Richards pov. There is some screenshot from a DVD extra in the writers room that shows it.

I think they made they right decision in the end changing it to what they did.

This seems to make sense, it stays consistent with what happened happened and what the point of the button was.
It still remains a problem that everyone, including Juliet, survived a nuclear bomb detonation but then I guess you're asking for an explanation when the bomb interacts with whatever occurred during the incident and basically asking to explain magic which is something I thought people wanted way too much of during season 6. It just does is sufficient enough, for me, then.
