    Hi guys,

Ok am getting seriously sick of this wee island...so am thinking of getting out of here, so here's my plan, I hope to head Stateside, do the US West Coast for 3 months or so (visa waiver thingy should be ok for this right??) then I want to head to Canada for a few months, have family there, do some travelling, skiing etc, then I'd like to go back to the US, do the East Coast maybe, have friends in various areas there so would probably spend a month of two there and from there not quite sure, maybe on to South America, or back to Europe maybe....not that relevant....

Anyway my question is, is it possible to get back into the US from Canada, once I have a flight booked to show evidence of plans to leave or would I have to come home again to get back in under visa waiver scheme?

Not really sure how or if this would work....if anyone could help this would be great...thanks!!

If travelling by air or sea to be eligible for the visa wavier you must have a return trip, it doesn't have to be to Ireland but you must have a ticket out of the US. Short travel to a contiguous territory (Canada, Mexico and some islands) does not re-set the clock on the VWP, i.e. if you leave after 85 days and return the next day you only get admitted for 4 days. Although entry to the US is up to the border officer a good rule of thumb for the VWP is to spend as much time outside the US as inside it. I think you would be ok as you plan to spend some time in Canada before re-entering the US just remember that you must have a return ticket when you arrive first from Ireland. Details of VWP here.
