I have a Sony W series TV. When tuned to a Freeview channel, if I press the "i" button I get an information screen telling me that the picture I am seeing is 576/25Hz.

My brother has a Sony BX series TV. When the corresponding button is pressed, his information screen indicates 576/50Hz.

I am confused. Can anyone explain what the difference is?

Or, more to the point, WHY is there a difference?

All broadcast TV in all of Europe is Interlaced.

It's 50 fields a second each with odd or even lines from the total 576 lines (regular) or 1080 lines (HD). So it's 25 full frames of all the lines a second.
(Analogue uses 625 lines, but only about 576 are used for picture).

So they could be counting different stuff.

Also one of them might be de-interlacing or a so-called 100Hz TV.

576i/50 shows 50 1/2 frames per second (interlaced)
576p/25 shows 25 full frames per second (progressive)

Was your brother watching a DVD when he pressed the button?

Edit: sorry my comment doesn't make sense... I misread the above and thought that your brother was getting 576p so thought maybe he was watching a DVD - didn't realise that it appears that you are getting 576p on a broadcast channel
