Thinking of doing the Iron Man in SA in April of next year. Have a pretty good level of fitness, running, swimming and biking. Have been trying to find training programmes online, but all are very American and supply books and books on preparation, nutrition etc.... I'm just looking for a simple training plan to see what level of committment I'll have to put in. Any advice much appreciated......

beginnertriathlete are probably the best know free generic plans. They're pretty clutter free.

A lot of people around here are Fink fans....simple and easy to follow.

The web is full of sample training plans.

I like the hornet juice one.

Now if only I could stick to it :)

Any generic IM training plan is going to be a bit hit and miss depending on your base fitness, background, etc. If you want to get around in an average time then they are ok (ask me on August 2nd:D), if you want to do a sub 10hr then perhaps they're not so good.

Bespoke programmes made by people that know what they are talking about .
(either themselves or coaches[but be aware of the pack-em-high coaches that just fire out the same cr@p to everyone]).

Doing an IM properly takes a few years lead in. Not only for the body to adapt but to educate yourself in what needs to be done.

I would imagine a copy of this and a bit of time making out your own plan based on it would be better than any of the generic plans found online?

As for too much detail on preperation and nutrition, I am no expert but I would think this is quite a core chunk of IM training.

I amm just completing a 30 week Fink programme and doing Ironman Switzerland next weekend.
    I bought his book "IRONFIT"
There are 3x programmes , Just Finish, Intermediate & Competitive. Really good and you can mix some of the sessions from each level depending on how strong you are at each dicipline.
My background is running, and I have never followed a plan for 30 weeks, but I highly reccommend it as it was all relevant. Apart from a few missed sessions, I have pretty much stuck with the plan which is important.
I really only started triathlon in 2008 and have never run a marathon.
You need to be organised and it takes up a lot of time.
    Good Luck!
